  • Chartered in 1983, Aga Khan University (AKU, www.aku.edu) is a private, autonomous and self-governing international university, with 13 teaching sites in 6 countries over three continents.   • The Medical College in East Africa is part of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The College is working with the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, and Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam to build a new academic community providing outstanding health professional education, building strong programmes of research supporting graduate student and postdoctoral training and providing programmes and services relevant and impactful across East Africa.

  • We have the distinct advantage of being part of an over one hundred year history of service to the East African community through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) that includes a broad range of community development and healthcare delivery services across East Africa.

  • In addition, we are transforming the quality of health care in the region via the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi where we are building a Faculty of Health Sciences campus closely integrated with the broader health care delivery system of the AKDN.

  • Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean Undergraduate Medical Education will be responsible for supporting the Dean in the development, ongoing operation, and quality assurance of all undergraduate educational programs within the College of Medicine.

  • He/she will act as a liaison to other entities within the Faculty of Health Sciences and to the other educational programmes of the Aga Khan University (AKU) in East Africa and AKU as a whole. As a member of the senior team of the College, the Associate Dean will provide input and support for the overall operation of the Medical College within East Africa.

  • The incumbent will be, based in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Responsibilities

  • Lead the operational and strategic planning of the Undergraduate Educational Programmes of the Medical College in the Faculty of Health Sciences through an Office of Undergraduate Medical Education and participates in
    strategic planning activities of the Faculty of Health Sciences and AKU more broadly.

  • Provide supervision and mentorship to faculty who have taken on specific educational leadership roles within the Medical College.

  • Support the Office of the Dean in recruitment of all educational leadership roles within the College and specific responsibility for recruitment and performance review of Directors and Assistant Deans within the Undergraduate Medical Education portfolio.

  • Support the development, implementation and quality review of all programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs of the College.

  • Establish strong working relationship with the leadership of other entities within AKU to ensure coordinated planning, implementation and quality control of common programmes.

  • Establish liaison with the Registrar’s Office, Examination Board and other AKU and AKDN entities to coordinate student intake, teaching, examinations, and overall experience

  • Develop the budget for Undergraduate programmes and has overall responsibility for the financial resources dedicated to undergraduate medical programmes.

  • Contribute to and provides leadership in educational scholarship.

  • Provide liaison to the AKUHN and other AKHS facilities in relation to educational goals and activities.

  • Provide academic liaison to AKU-wide activities and to the AKDN.

  • Provide liaison to local, regional and international government, university and professional bodies related to education.

    Requirements

  • Master of Medicine or its equivalent.

  • Registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

  • Advanced training in medical education and/or educational leadership preferred.

  • The individual will be at or appointable as an Associate Professor or Professor.

  • Demonstrated track record in positions of increasing responsibility.

  • Possess a record of scholarly achievement in medical education.

  • Demonstrated scholarly activity in medical education and teaching and will be a mentor to other leaders within the education portfolio.

  • Strong organizational administrative skills. Understands internal processes in a university and can work to make them more effective and efficient.

  • Possesses the ability to work with Faculty to choose initiatives with both strategic and tactical focus in the context of this vision.

  • Ability to build teams, providing leadership within a horizontal structure.

  • Leads with a collegial, open and transparent approach while also able to make difficult decisions and move the Faculty forward. Is fair and consistent, strategic and inspirational to the collective.
