Job Description

Africure Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Ethiopia PLC, is a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant being set up in Addis Ababa at Kilinto Pharmaceutical Industrial Park.

Upon completion, the plant will produce several oral solid and liquid dosage forms of essential medicines for the local and export markets in the region.

The company is hiring an experienced, competent, highly committed and ethical Environment Health and Safety Specialist.

The Environmental Health and Safety Manager reports to the Site General Manager.

The position is responsible for developing, implementing and continually improving Africure’s Environmental, Health, Safety and Security programs in a manner that reduces risk, prevents incidents and complies with external regulatory requirements to provide an environment that is safe and secure for employees, visitors and contractors.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Guide and promote employee health and safety performance by developing health and safety systems, policies and procedures, campaigns and programs to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses, and enhance the overall site safety culture resulting in management engagement, employee involvement and the reduction in unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Maintain and control daily EHS practices with regular checks of work area, ensure that hazards are identified, precautionary measures are taken and advice Contractor supervisors on EHS matters.
  • Motivate and handle sub-contractor team to implement safety on work place as per Corporate EHS Guidelines and Procedure.
  • Conduct EHS/IFC/EIA Gap Analysis.
  • Conduct safety awareness program for workmen like Toolbox talk/ safety talk prior to work start.
  • Inspection of Tools & Tackles, Equipment & Machine, Scaffolding's, Electrical Equipment's, Crane etc. before starting the work.
  • Conduct assessments, inventories and inspections for various environmental and safety regulations. These include:
  • Job Hazard Assessments
  • Accident Investigations
  • Hazard control and Prevention Reports
  • Tracking and verification of corrective actions
  • Environmental Impact Assessments
  • Audits to the Environmental, Health and Safety programs
  • Preparation of Safe Operating Procedures for activities identified in HIRA (Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment).
  • Conduct and coordinate training programs at site as per corporate EHS Guidelines.
  • Conduct Mock Drills for checking onsite emergency preparedness
    (Fire Drill, Work at Height Rescue).
  • Conducting various programs like safety month celebration, housekeeping week and month celebration, national safety day, world environment day etc. to increase the awareness of workmen towards safety.
  • Take initiatives in the matter of EHS with an objective to upgrade the standards of Occupational Safety & Environmental protection.
  • Accident/Incident investigation and root cause analysis and communicate for Corrective and Preventive action (CAPA) to avoid re-occurrence.
  • Assist and guide internal and external customers with regards to Environmental, Health, and Safety issues, including special projects, new products, and complaints or concerns.
  • Advances the EH&S objectives and achievement of results through the engagement of appropriate stakeholders throughout the organization including the management and direction of the site safety committees
  • Ensure that complaints, incidents, compliance deviations and enforcement actions are fully investigated and work with other departments to ensure corrective and preventative measures are taken.
  • Establish, maintain, and continually improve a process where employees can communicate EH&S related questions and concerns
  • Implement and continuously improve loss control programs such as emergency response, business continuity, crisis management planning, access control and building/life safety consulting other leaders as appropriate

    Job Requirements

    Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Safety, Environmental Engineering or other relevant discipline, or a minimum of 10 years of directly relevant experience
  • Master’s Degree and/or relevant professional certifications is a plus
  • Minimum 10 years EH&S experience in a manufacturing environment is required
  • 5+ years in an EH&S leadership/management role is preferred
  • Knowledgeable in ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, IFC EHS guidelines and IFC Performance Standards.
  • Sound knowledge and application skills of various national and international legislations/ standards/ guidelines in the field of Occupational Health Safety & Environment.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or manufacturing industry a plus
