African Institute for Development Policy Audit and Compliance Officer Jobs in Kenya;AFIDEP seeks to recruit an experienced Audit & Compliance Officer to establish and operate a risk‑based internal audit and compliance function.

The role carries an institute‑wide mandate, covering all departments, projects and country offices, to ensure adherence to international accounting standards, donor regulations, statutory obligations and AFIDEP policies.

Key Responsibilities

Audit Planning & Management

Develop annual risk‑based audit plan for Board Audit Committee approval.

Lead audits in accordance with IIA standards, producing formal reports with findings and corrective actions.

Track implementation of audit recommendations and escalate unresolved issues.

Financial & Accounting Compliance

Audit financial records for compliance with IFRS, AFIDEP policies and statutory requirements.

Ensure donor compliance in complex multi‑donor environments.

Evaluate and strengthen internal controls to safeguard assets and prevent fraud.

Risk Management

Maintain and update institutional risk register using COSO/ISO 31000 frameworks.

Establish fraud risk policies and whistleblower mechanisms; lead investigations.

Maintain internal risk and compliance tracking systems.

Systems & Operational Review

Evaluate ERP and financial systems for effectiveness, data integrity and security.

Develop SOPs and tools to ensure consistent policy application.

Identify inefficiencies and recommend process improvements.

Governance & Reporting

Monitor compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements in Kenya, Malawi and USA.

Capacity Building

Design and deliver staff training on compliance and internal controls.

Promote a culture of proactive compliance and ethical conduct.

Qualifications & Experience

Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field.

Full professional certification (CPA, ACCA, CIA or equivalent) mandatory; CIA preferred.

Minimum 8 years’ progressive experience in internal audit, financial management or compliance, with 5 years in international NGO or donor‑funded institutions.

Strong donor compliance knowledge across bilateral, multilateral and private foundations.

Working knowledge of statutory and regulatory environments in Kenya/Malawi.

Experience with ERP systems, audit software and advanced Excel.

Familiarity with COSO/ISO 31000 risk frameworks and IIA audit standards.

Desirable

Experience in IT/system audits, ERP access management or cybersecurity compliance.

Familiarity with grants management platforms.

Multi‑country compliance experience.

Competencies

Clear communication and influence with non‑financial stakeholders.

Relationship management with colleagues while maintaining professional scepticism.

Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.

Initiative, self‑management and ability to deliver under minimal supervision.

Data literacy and proficiency in visualising audit findings.
