About the Opportunity

The Data Engineer is a new position for Inkomoko as we double the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning team in 2023. This is a regional position, responsible for deliverables across our countries of operation in Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. The Data Engineer will work alongside the Data Scientist and Data Analyst, all reporting to the head of Business Intelligence, the Business Analytics Manager.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines and databases. They will also be responsible for cleaning and QA of data, developing ETL processes, and optimizing data storage solutions.

The Data Engineer will work closely with the organization’s stakeholders to ensure that the data collected is accurate, secure, and accessible. They will also be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to improve the organization’s data quality.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines and databases

  • Own creation of data models and build “source of truth” datasets, define metrics, and build data visualizations and dashboards

  • Perform adhoc analysis to investigate trends in metrics, better understand root causes, and identify opportunities

  • Develop and implement ETL processes for both quantitative and qualitative data sets

  • Optimize data storage solutions, ensuring accessibility and security of data

  • Ensure that the data collected is
    accurate and up-to-date

  • Develop strategies to improve the organization’s data quality and cleaning protocols

  • Monitor the performance of databases and troubleshoot any issues that arise, in partnership with the IT Department database staff

  • Manage UIDs for clients and ensure quality tracking of data across internal systems

  • Work with team members in MEL to ensure that the data collection tools, processes, and methodologies result in reliable data to answer important questions

    Minimum Qualifications

    The candidate should be at an advanced level within the M&E domain and bring years of relevant experience to the role. The ideal candidate will fulfill the following requirements:

  • Previous experience in data management in a complex and fast-scaling environment in East Africa

  • At least 3 years work experience in data management

  • Experience in SQL to model data and optimise queries

  • Ability to work with APIs

  • Experience with ETLs and basic python scripting

  • Bachelors’ degree in Statistics, Math, Engineering, Computer science or other relevant field
