Background

Africa Humanitarian Action (AHA) responds to displacements caused by crises, conflicts and disasters, providing emergency, development and policy advocacy services to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), migrants and their host communities.

Established in 1994, and working with and through African communities, AHA has extended its programmes in health, nutrition, WASH, livelihoods, and shelter in 20 African countries to date. Over the years, it has channeled over $200 million to help more than 26 million people affected by humanitarian crises.

AHA is committed to empower local institutions to enhance their ability for disaster preparedness, peaceful development and prosperity. The AHA Head Office directs and coordinates its continental activities.

Reports to the Executive Director;
Works closely with the Communications, Programmes and Finance units;
Liaises with AHA Country Representatives, existing donors, and potential new partners;
Liaises with relevant focal persons on the Assembly of Trustees, Executive Board, AHA Ambassadors and Friends of AHA as necessary.

Position Profile

The Resource Mobilization Officer (RMO) is responsible for the overall management and coordination of AHA’s fundraising activities. Primarily, s/he will oversee the development and implementation of AHA’s resource mobilization strategy.

The RMO is proactive in identifying new and non-traditional sources of funding from a range of institutional and private donors and working to leverage AHA’s funding prospects. S/he will also build the capacity of relevant staff at the AHA Head Office and Country Offices to develop and maintain partnerships with U.N. agencies, national and international NGOs, governments, private donors, academia and others.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the overall development and implementation process of AHA’s Resource Mobilization Strategy and plan;

  • Develop an operational plan for AHA’s resource mobilization activities that meets its strategic requirements in consultation with the Executive Director and key governance focal persons;

  • Research potential local, continental and international donors to gain insight into their interests, beliefs and donation habits to better position AHA to these donors;

  • Maintain complete and orderly records of donors and partners (“donors database”) and manage regular donor communications;

  • Build upon already existing donor relationships and form new ones on a regular basis;

  • Devise new and creative methods of fundraising activities that encourage contributions and take a lead in planning and coordinating such events;

  • Represent AHA in networking, updating, and liaising with key in-continent and international donors;

  • Develop and manage strategic consortium
    partnerships with relevant CSOs, academic organisations and private sector firms to leverage AHA’s probability of success in competitive calls for proposals;

  • Use technology and social media as necessary and create marketing materials, like annual reports, flyers and brochures, to be used for the promotion of events and other fundraising pushes;

  • Update AHA’s website with contents that are informational in order to engage new and existing donors;

  • Familiarize oneself with donors websites and award management portals;

  • Compile or develop materials to submit to granting or other funding organisations;

  • Recruit sponsors, participants and volunteers for fundraising events;

  • Establish fundraising or participation goals for special events or specified time periods;
    Performance of other duties as assigned by line manager.

    Working condition

    This is a full time post stationed in Addis Abeba.
    It requires the ability to travel, with short stays abroad, as necessary.

    Person Specification

  • Advanced degree in social sciences, humanities, development studies, political science, business administration, communication, public relations or related/applicable discipline;

  • Excellent English language skills (written, reading and spoken); Knowledge of French is a plus.

    Essential Knowledge, skills and experience

  • At least five years of experience in resource mobilisation in the non-profit sector. Experience in the African context is a plus;

  • Excellent writing, reasoning and analytical skills;

  • Experience in training and skills development;

  • Experience in developing successful proposals and grant applications to institutional donors, private trusts and foundations, as well as individual donors;

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills to work effectively in a multi-cultural setting, often at a distance;

  • Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail;

  • Quick thinker, able to prioritize own workload and make decisions under pressure.
