    Project Summary

    Adeso is leading in the implementation of Disasters and Emergencies Preparedness Program (DEPP) Innovation Lab is a 22 months’ project under the AIM (Adeso, iHub MasterCard) Consortium.

    The objective of this program is to increase preparedness and resilience of disaster-prone communities in Garissa and Marsabit counties of Kenya by drawing on their deep knowledge of pastoralist.

    The Consortium has formed the Maarifa Kona Community Innovations Labs in Garissa and Marsabit where rural communities are participating to find ideas, prototype and scale innovations for commercialization.

    It is from this background that a number of community Innovators are engaged with the Labs to refine and prototype their ideas.

    Background for Consultancy

    Maarifa Kona is an Innovation Lab that was created under the Adeso, iHub and Mastercard (AIM) Consortium.

    It functions as a community ideas space in the rural counties of Marsabit and Garissa, Kenya, where the communities can explore and develop better innovative mechanisms to build resilience and preparedness in the face of drought.

    We exist to:

  • To support inventors to develop practical solutions and new ideas to prepare for and manage drought
  • To create a new learning environment and accessible approach where people feel at ease sharing their experiences and testing their ideas.

    Our focus areas include:
  • Food security
  • Water management
  • Livestock protection
  • Other interventions related to drought e.g. alternative livelihoods, early warning systems etc.
  • Maarifa Kona Community Innovators are in the process of developing their products, which will soon be launched into the market and scaled.
  • To ensure that the Innovators understand the market dynamics for commercialization of their products to penetrate the market and community, there is need for accumulated skills and strategies on how to approach the market.
  • The training therefore intends to impact on the Innovators by developing their capacity on how to sell and market their respective products to the community.
  • It will entail Business Validation-Pricing Models, Market Testing and Usability Testing.

    Objectives of the Consultancy
  • To design basic sales and marketing manuals for the Innovators.
  • To undertake Business Validation-Pricing Models for all the Innovations.
  • To conduct Market Testing and Usability Testing of the Innovation Products within the community.
  • To provided one-on-one training and capacity development in the areas of sales and marketing.
  • To help the Innovators
    understand the niche of their products, and price setting.
  • To help the Innovators create awareness about their innovative products or services.
  • To help the Innovators design branding strategies and digital marketing.

    Methodology
  • The training will be conducted through demonstrations, one-on-one presentations and training.
  • Adult training methodologies will need to be employed so as to improve the Innovators’ understanding.
  • Methodologies of delivery should ensure that the marketing and sales knowledge and skill-building techniques that will be employed, will allow the successful building and management of innovation ethics framework.
  • To set the pricing models, the Consultant will need to carry out and conduct surveys within the Community to determine the pricing models that will create profitable business for the innovations.

    Scope of Work
  • The training will be undertaken in phases within the counties of Nairobi, Garissa and Marsabit on various occasions.

    Consultancy Period
  • The consultancy period will be based on call basis for specific dates of training schedules based on the counties within the period of up to 30th May 2019.

    Deliverables
  • Training Manual for Marketing and Sales for Innovations.
  • Training report demonstrating a participatory training approach and a list of post training actions for sales and marketing.
  • Business Validation and Product Pricing Models.

    Qualifications

    Education:

  • Masters’ Degree (or equivalent degree/experience) in Business Administration/Management and Sales and Marketing or related fields mandatory.

    Experience:
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in Sales and Marketing training.
  • Experience in product launch, product scaling and sales and marketing.
  • Experience in facilitation/training skills especially in adult learning methodologies.
  • Knowledge and experience of community engagement.
  • Demonstrated excellent training delivery, analytical, writing and editing skills.
  • Prior working experience with communities in Northern Kenya is desirable.

    Language:
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Swahili. Good presentation and communication skills.

    Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights
  • In consideration of the fees paid, the Consultant expressly assigns to Adeso any copyright arising from the works the consultant produces while executing this contract.
  • All images (whether used for online or print purposes) must however bear the consultant’s photo credit, as specified by international intellectual property rights.
  • The consultant may not use, reproduce or otherwise disseminate or authorize others to use, reproduce or disseminate such works without prior consent from Adeso.
