  • In the context of its regional project “Promoting Freedom of Expression, Rule of Law and Access to Justice in East Africa”, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) intends to recruit a Project Assistant (Part-Time) to contribute to effective project implementation of ABA activities and by partner organizations, specifically in Uganda and Tanzania. The project aims to enhance protection of freedom of expression, civic space as well as related fundamental rights in Uganda and Tanzania. It will be achieved through a combination of means: strategic litigation at the national and regional levels; advocacy for greater protection of freedom of expression; the provision of legal aid to defenders, journalists and NGO actors at risk; capacity building of strategic partners; and public sensitization on these issues to enhance knowledge.

    Terms of Reference

  • The Project Assistant (Part-Time) will provide direct support to ABA ROLI’s Program Support Manager in Kampala, Uganda for the purposes of this Freedom of Expression in East Africa project. This position is part-time; specifically, there will be approximately 15 hours worked per week, subject to fluctuation. The Project Assistant will report to the Uganda-based Program Support Manager and will liaise with ABA ROLI program staff in Washington, D.C on a regular basis. Duties will include helping with aspects of financial management, logistical and administrative support for the successful execution of all ABA activities under the project, and subgrantee oversight.

    Key responsibilities will include:

  • Support coordination and organizing of all project-related activities, trainings, stakeholders’ meetings, and other engagements—including preparing presentations, organizing logistics, etc.

  • Support and undertake research and
    documentation-related needs under the project

  • Supporting Program Support Manager and Washington, D.C.-based staff in aspects of administrative reporting and accounting by sub-grantees;

  • Liaise as necessary with Washington, D.C.-based program staff on expense reporting, operational aspects of programs, and contractual matters

  • Other duties as assigned

    Position Requirements

  • National or permanent resident of Uganda

  • University graduate (LLB) in law or related field;

  • 1-3 years of relevant professional experience in program implementation/coordination with the NGO sector in Uganda and/or Tanzania;

  • Experience in accounting and/or handling financial aspects considered an advantage.

  • Familiarity with the current and evolving situation of freedom of expression, civic space, and access to justice in Uganda and/or Tanzania;

  • Research, writing and communication skills are a plus

  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
