AAS FLAIR Programme Officer Jobs in Kenya

The AAS is a Pan-African organisation whose headquarters are in Kenya.. The Academy has a tripartite mandate of pursuing excellence by recognising scholars and achievers; providing advisory and think-tank functions for shaping the continent’s strategies and policies; and implementing key science, technology and innovation programmes that impact on developmental challenges through the agenda setting and funding platform - the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA).



The Programme Officer will provide operational and research support to the implementation and delivery of the Future Leaders – African Independent Researchers (FLAIR) Programme.


The FLAIR Post-Doctoral Fellowship programme is a partnership of The African Academy of sciences (AAS) and the Royal Society, United Kingdom, with support from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).


This opportunity is for talented early career researchers working in various sub-Saharan African universities and higher education institutes in their field. The fellowships provide the opportunity to build an independent research career in a sub-Saharan African institution and to undertake cutting-edge scientific research that will address global challenges facing developing countries.


The incumbent will collaborate closely with other AAS programmes to achieve the overall strategic goals of the Academy.


Key Responsibilities

Grants Application Management


  • Manage the grant application, review, and award process using the AAS online grant management platform to ensure accountability, measurability, report ability, and verifiability of the grants
  • Support the launching of calls for funding on the online grant management platform, provide support to applicants during the application process and generate reports upon awarding of grants
  • Liaise with the grant management system providers to ensure the seamless flow of the grant administration process
  • Participate in committees created for purposes of managing grants under the CIRLE programme.

    Programme Support

  • Prepare relevant programme material required for submission to agencies and foundations that fund research
  • Attend programme related meetings, prepare meeting reports for sharing with senior management and represent the Programme Manager at the meetings as required
  • Manage engagement with the digital community in collaboration with the
  • Communications Department to ensure content on the programme website is updated on a timely basis. This includes providing image and video content for the website
  • Perform routine clerical duties to ensure the smooth running of the office including handling programme related correspondence, enquiries (both telephone calls and walk-in visitors), record and book keeping, and compiling reports
  • Undertake administrative duties such as organising meetings/conferences, liasiing with vendors to ensure delivery of supplies, and act as the contact person for clients
  • Support other programmes and departments within the AAS in
    the delivery of their mandate through provision of operational and research support, and, participating in the procurement committee and its activities.

    Research support

  • Carry out academic research for the FLAIR programme, data collection and data analysis; prepare literature reviews, assist in drafting manuscripts and in preparation of academic publications
  • Perform programme related research to inform the grant application process such as conducting research in archives, or through interviews, online, or other appropriate means in support of the supervisor
  • Assist in the preparation of articles, reports, and presentations for meetings and conferences
  • Prepare reports, articles and presentations for accountability and dissemination to stakeholders, agencies and foundations that fund the programme’s research.


    Qualifications and Experience

  • A Master's degree in any field of the natural or biomedical sciences from a recognised institution
  • A professional qualification or experience in a research related area or programme management is an added advantage
  • At least 3 years’ relevant experience
  • Proven working experience in performing academic research

    Knowledge and Skills


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project, Outlook
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to communicate across different levels of the organisation and with external partners and grantees
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but also to participate in a team
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain a timely and efficient work flow
  • Strong planning and organisational skills and ability to work under pressure and meet very tight deadlines
  • Ability to multi-task and to prioritise work amidst competing demands
  • Have unquestionable integrity, confidentiality and respect. The AAS has strict policies for ethical conduct and practice and a zero tolerance for fraud.
