Action Africa Help International (AAH-I) is a regional African-led non-governmental organisation that supports livelihood-challenged communities in East and Southern Africa to sustainably improve their well being and standard of living.

With Country Programmes in South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia, Djibouti and Ethiopia.

AAH-I has over 25 years’ experience working with communities in conflict and postconflict
situations, including refugees, internally displaced people and host communities.

More recently AAH-I has expanded its activities to work with other marginalized communities, including pastoralists and people living in informal urban settlements.

Responsibilities

  • Keep up-to-date with donor policy developments and trends, in the development and humanitarian
    sectors in-countries of operation, regionally and globally.
  • Should be well-informed and knowledgeable
    on funding sources, donor guidelines, formats, rules, regulations, and restrictions;
  • Provide technical and research support to the Country Directors regarding funding opportunities and work closely with them to ensure country resource mobilization strategies are in place;
  • Consolidate the country annual resource mobilization business plans, with clear forecasts and targets, into a regional plan and track/report accomplishment on quarterly basis;
  • Set up and maintain a robust funding opportunities intel system at regional and country levels, be proactive in the lookout for opportunities for regional donors and circulate identified opportunities promptly to the country offices;
  • Assist country offices to develop pre-positioning plans and support the country office teams in the preposition meetings with specific donors, based on mapped donor priorities;
  • Support initiation of operations in new countries through conducting assessments, information gathering and funding proposal preparation;
  • Guide country teams to develop and deepen programmatic thinking and design of innovative
    programming models that better address the needs of women, children and youth in the region, in line with the SDGs and professional standards;
  • Leverage, adapt and promote innovative programming and non-traditional fundraising initiatives, particularly; social enterprises, application of ICT4D techniques, research collaboration, innovation challenge, legacy funding and online fundraising;
  • Mobilise internal teams to support funding proposal development processes by leading complete risk assessment processes and go/no-go decisions for potential opportunities, ensuring high quality
    concepts and proposals are prepared in timely manner, and in line with AAH-I and donor guidelines;
  • Work with Finance team to ensure budgeting and all necessary costs are correctly incorporated in a manner that meets the AAH-I cost recovery policy and donor thresholds;
  • Oversee business development services work outsourced to vendors, ensuring quality, timeliness and value for money;
    Manage end-to-end the partner engagement processes for AAH-I i.e. tool development, identification,
    solicitation, vetting, selection, performance assessment and MoU signing;
  • In close collaboration with the Country Directors develop innovative and meaningful partnerships and consortia with private, public, research, academic and non-government partners.
  • Ensure an up-to-date network of key partners and partner-engagement plan exist and that relevant staff are equipped to adopt
    and implement the plan;
  • Develop close relationships with donor agencies, particularly those with local missions in Nairobi, maintaining sound on-going relationships i.e. soliciting and providing feedback and exploring opportunities for growth and for deepening their engagement with AAH-I;
  • Assist in the preparation of documents prior to meeting with existing and potential partners.
  • As a sub-budget holder, plan, manage and monitor the Partnership & Business Development budget allocations in line with organizational demands and strategic investment decisions

    Minimum qualification and requirements:
  • Master’s degree and/or professional qualification in Business Administration,
    Social Science,
    International Development or related field;
  • A very good knowledge of global humanitarian issues and trends, especially in The Horn and The
    Great Lakes, coupled with ability to analyse impact and opportunities of unfolding events on donor funding; Regional experience working in the AAH-I countries is an advantage;
  • Experience of at least 7 years and strong knowledge (breadth and depth) of AAH-I’s major
    programming pillars: food and income security; health; education and disaster risk reduction and
    management, as well as the cross-cutting themes (gender, conflict sensitivity, ICT4D and good
    governance);
  • Familiarity with the SPHERE standards, Durable Solutions Framework, Code of Conduct for Red
    Cross/Red Crescent, Humanitarian Accountability Partnerships (HAP); other international
    humanitarian standards;
  • Preferred experience using ICT for development, in particular, mobile technology, data management, block chain technology and artificial intelligence, to improve programme efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Good knowledge of log-frames, strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically and innovatively, constantly pursuing new and better ways of working;
  • Familiarity with and experience in responding to Requests for Applications/Proposals (RFA/RFP),
    Call for Proposals (CFP) and unsolicited calls;
  • Demonstrated record of success in developing winning funding proposals from a diverse range of
    donors.
  • Experience in raising funds from corporations and/or large trusts and foundations and nontraditional donors is an advantage;
  • Ability to engage at strategic level with bilateral and multilateral donors, Governments, private sector and INGOs, exhibiting excellent presentation, communication, negotiation and networking skills;
  • An energetic self-starter with resilience, pace, interpersonal flexibility and ability to deal with demanding work situations and sometimes ambiguity.
  • Able to work under pressure and has the
    ability to meet tight deadlines;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to harness cross-functional contributions to the programme and resource development processes, being able to effectively employ face-to-face, telephone, Skype, email and other electronic communication with internal and external colleagues;
  • Must demonstrate advanced spoken and written communication skills in English, with the ability to write effectively for varied purposes and audiences; including programme design documents, donor proposals, reports and publications. Working knowledge of French and Arabic is an advantage;
  • Administratively self-sufficient and strong computer skills with advanced proficiency with MS
    applications, and a willingness to learn additional softwares and systems as required.
