William Wilberforce Award from Free the Slaves

Free the Slaves is seeking nominations under the William Wilberforce Award to recognize efforts and contributions made towards combating modern-day slavery around the world.

The modern-day slavery can include human trafficking and debt-bondage leading to violation of basic human rights for those victimized by it.

About the Award:

In 2009, one Award named after William Wilberforce will be given to an individual who has moved a major institution, government, business or large groups of people to significant action to fight slavery.

The recipient will receive:

• $10,000 to be awarded over two years, to use as he or she sees fit.

Award criteria:

The William Wilberforce Award will be awarded to an individual who most effectively demonstrates:

  • Leadership that has resulted in moving a major institution, government, business or large groups of people to significant action to combat slavery.
  • Leadership that helps build and reinforce the capacity of local communities to claim their rights and resist slaveholders or slave traffickers.
  • Leadership that has included inventing new methods to combat slavery which have been shown to be effective.
  • Track record of basing anti-slavery actions on the realities of people in slavery and consciously avoiding actions that may win popularity but do not actually bring people out of slavery or fight the root causes of slavery.
  • Courage and persistence in overcoming barriers to progress against slavery or resisting retaliatory action by slaveholders and their allies.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    Individuals are eligible for the Award if they are:

  • Willing to travel to the USA (we will cover travel costs and assist with obtaining travel documents).
  • Willing to speak about his or her experiences.
  • Be willing for FTS to visit the work in order to film for a vignette, within one month of confirmation of the award.

    Individuals are not eligible if:

  • They are a current or former paid staff member of Free the Slaves (unpaid interns or volunteers are eligible).
  • They have a family member who is currently on Free the Slaves’ Board or paid staff.
