Regional Youth Programmes Adviser

The role

VSO is currently delivering a large DFID youth volunteering programme, International Citizen Service (ICS).

Working across several countries in Africa, your role will be to support VSO county offices in the design, development, implementation, budgeting and monitoring and evaluation of ICS programmes in alignment with contract requirements and standards.

You will also work wider to establish communities of practice in the region that promote knowledge sharing, learning and innovation and support country offices in the promotion of effective programmatic work involving national and international youth volunteers.

You will ensure consistency and coherence in youth volunteering programming, its alignment to relevant aspects of VSO's Theory of Change, and its interpretation within a holistic approach to development.

With your knowledge and expertise in youth or development programming, you will also support development of new youth volunteering programmes and to support fundraising activities.

The applicant

Essential criteria

Knowledge/qualifications:

  • A good standard of general education, ideally to graduate level or equivalent.
  • Understanding of current issues and trends in youth programming and Volunteering for Development.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.

    Experience:

  • Experience of direct work in youth or development programming in Africa; supporting planning and implementation of programmes at all levels. Experience of working in a developing country.
  • Experience of project management including planning, review, and evaluation of community-based development work.
  • Experience of supporting programmes in budgeting and financial management, monitoring and evaluation and measuring impact.

    Skills/Abilities:

  • Analytical thinking and ability to plan strategically from an organisational perspective.
  • Able to adapt communication style to different contexts and audiences, including internal and external stakeholders, presents complex information in a user-friendly way, both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to handle complex workload including doing own administration.
  • Commitment to VSO’s vision, purpose and values, particularly inclusion along lines of gender, disability and HIV status.
  • Team working skills: able to build strong working relationships across a large complex global area, and work collaboratively as a member of several teams. Able to motivate, manage and develop colleagues; self motivated.
  • Willingness to work some unsocial hours, including evenings and weekends. Also to travel internationally up to 12 weeks per year.
