US Funding for Strengthening Women’s Organizations

Foreign and US-based NGOs can apply for a new funding opportunity from the Office of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (NEA/PI), Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the US Department of State.

Proposals are being invited from organizations through an open competition "to strengthen women’s participation in all aspects of society and promote women’s equality in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)."

Building organizational capacities of women’s organizations is one of the priority areas identified under this grant opportunity and it has a funding ceiling of one million US dollars. NGOs applying here have to propose projects that will work closely with such organizations by building their capacities through training and other forms of support.

Technical support of these organizations can be enhanced through "organizational strategic planning; budgeting and financial management; fund raising and business development; project management; internal governance; human resources management; database management; creative messaging and strategic public outreach; team building; coalition and network development; and gender-focused advocacy program planning."

The other priority area with a funding ceiling of US $950,000 is developing women’s caucuses and unions for empowering female political activists.

In this context, activities can include: "building networks of women leaders that cut across party lines to collectively address community needs; legislation-drafting workshops; strategies for building consensus; constituent relations; developing public policy campaigns; educating women on local and national politics and processes; supporting and training female candidates as well as organizing meetings, workshops, or round tables with other elected officials and activists to promote relevant issues."

All submissions have to be made through the Grants.gov website for which prior registration is necessary for all applicants. Applicants registering for the first time need to prepare the proposal at least 10 days ahead of the deadline as registration time can be lengthy at times.

Application Deadline: 3rd December.
