Stanford External Faculty Fellowships

Since its inception in 1980, the Humanities Center has offered fellowships to more than 550 faculty from nearly 100 universities in the United States and other countries.

External fellows come from all ranks of the professoriate and from a wide variety of disciplinary fields, colleges and universities.

The Center typically offers six to eight external fellowships each year.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have a PhD and will normally be at least three years beyond receipt of the degree at the start of the fellowship year (i.e., will have received the PhD in or before September 2007 for the 2010-2011 fellowship).

  • Junior fellowships are for scholars who will be at least three and no more than ten years beyond receipt of the Ph.D. by the start of their prospective fellowship year.

  • Senior fellowships are for established scholars who are more than ten years beyond receipt of the PhD.
  • External fellowships are intended primarily for individuals currently teaching or affiliated with an academic institution, but independent scholars may apply.
  • Faculty fellowships are awarded across the spectrum of academic ranks (assistant, associate, and full professor).
  • Scholars who are members of traditionally under-represented groups are encouraged to apply.
  • There are no citizenship requirements for these fellowships; non-U.S. nationals are welcome to apply.
  • Fellowships are awarded to support research projects in the humanities; creative arts projects are not eligible.
  • The Humanities Center seeks candidates whose research is likely to contribute to intellectual exchange among a diverse group of scholars within the disciplines of the humanities.
  • Former external faculty fellows are not eligible to reapply.

    Stipends:

  • Fellows are awarded stipends of up to $60,000 and a housing and moving allowance of up to $15,000, dependent upon need.
  • Applicants who require additional support are expected to seek supplementary funding in the form of external grants or sabbatical or other contributions from home institutions.

    Deadline: 15th October
