Senior Researcher:

The African Conflict Prevention Programme (ACCP) at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Pretoria seeks to appoint a senior researcher to specialise in conflict dynamics and the political economy of the Southern Africa region as well as SADC.

The central tasks of the position will be policy research publications, dissemination and policy formulation in relation to these specialist areas.

ACPP is the conflict analysis unit of the ISS (formerly known as the African Security Analysis Programme – ASAP) and aims to provide both timely and in-depth analysis of conflict dynamics and other threats to human security in Africa.

More generally, the programme strives to complement the African Union’s peace and security agenda of promoting peace and security on the continent through analysing conflict situations and issuing early warnings that can be used by various stakeholders to prevent conflicts in Africa.

The successful senior researcher will be responsible for key activities relating to research and analysis, publications, dissemination and policy formulation on issues related to conflict dynamics in Southern Africa region.

In addition to tracking and monitoring conflict-related developments in the region she/he will have a special focus on SADC and will analyse the various developments of this Regional Economic Community with which she/he will be expected to develop close links.

The duties also involve close collaboration with partner organisations, submission of reports, briefings, media interaction and extensive travel within and outside the region.

The candidate will also develop policy recommendations to support the conflict prevention, management and resolution activities of the Institute’s stakeholders (national governments, regional and international organisations, civil society).

Requirements:

  • The candidate should have at least a Masters qualification (PhD is advantageous) in international relations, African politics, or other relevant social science disciplines, or an equivalent professional experience in a policy research environment.

  • At least three to five years of relevant work experience within a relevant professional environment.

  • Excellent research and writing skills should be attested by a publication record.

  • Excellent knowledge of the workings of SADC, and good knowledge of the UN, AU and African governmental and inter-governmental institutions as well as civil society.

  • Fluency in English is essential (Knowledge of Portuguese will be an advantage) as well as excellent knowledge of the region.

  • Ability to work under high pressure and to meet tight deadlines.

  • Particular interest in conflict analysis, early-warning and conflict prevention.

  • Good networking abilities.

  • Computer literacy is required.

    This position is based at the ISS Office in Pretoria and includes extensive regional and international travel.

    The length of the contract will be for two years, subject to annual performance-based review.
