Title: Senior Researcher /Senior Lecturer position in Agricultural Economics, Markets and Trade

Summary: The Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, with support from the International Food Policy Research Institute, has established a three-year contract position for a Senior Researcher/Lecturer.

The position is a three- year, fixed-term, renewable appointment, based in Pretoria, South Africa starting on January 1, 2007.

Duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Department at University of Pretoria and the IFPRI Division Director (Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division) and in close collaboration with other staff as appropriate, the candidate will conduct research and analysis on the issues related to agribusiness and agricultural markets, and will be responsible for developing and leading projects related to the study of changing food systems in Southern Africa.

Of high importance in the region are issues related to increasing consolidation and concentration in food processing industry and organized retailing through different institutional designs of vertical and horizontal integration (for example: contract farming, farmer associations, etc). The researcher will study the implications of such fast changing food systems on the small farmers and other poor households, and will research on the design of policies that can help them to exploit these emerging opportunities.
