Scholarships in Security and Justice for Doctoral, Masters and Honour Students

Applications are invited from graduates for the National Research Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral, Master’s and Honours students at the Faculty of Law, University of Cape Town.

Through the National Research Foundation (NRF) South African Chair in African Security and Justice, scholarships are available for excellent students who are currently registered or who wish to register at the University of Cape Town for full-time study.

Successful candidates will be expected to work within, and support, the activities of the African Security and Justice Programme (ASJP) which has as its key objective the development of research on multi-level physical security governance and environmental security governance with a particular focus on climate change.

Tenure:

  • Full-time Honours – 1 year
  • Master’s – 1 year renewable for a further year contingent on satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds
  • Doctoral – 1 year renewable on a yearly basis for up to 3 years contingent on satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds.

    Disciplines:

  • The Centre of Criminology offers a two-year Honours/MPhil programme.
  • BSocSc (Honours) in Criminology and Criminal Justice is awarded in the first year and Masters in the second year.
  • Masters can be done by coursework or dissertation.
  • An LLM in Criminology and Criminal Justice is also on offer for Law graduates.

  • Honours: R17 000
  • Master’s: R55 000
  • Doctoral: R78 000

    Scholarships at the Honours, Master’s and Doctoral level may be supplemented through competitive applications for research assistantships.

    Appropriate funding for research expenses may also be available.
