Computer Vision in Skin Lesion Analysis and Modelling

This research project will focus on the analysis and modelling of skin moles or lesions with the object of differentiating between benign lesions and malignant melanoma; novel 3D imaging techniques will be used.

The project is a part of a wider programme involving physically-based modelling with the aim of predicting the development of malignant and other lesions.

A further objective of the current project will be to decide on appropriate data and provide it for the wider programme.

The work will build on expertise and experience in the medical use of machine vision, developed through work in collaboration with the Institute of Cancer Research and with The Royal Marsden and Frenchay Hospitals, where early clinical trials have been underway to assess the effectiveness of new imaging technology in the diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

A consultant surgeon at Frenchay Hospital, who specialises in melanoma, will act as a collaborative supervisor for the student undertaking this research.

Areas of skills and expertise that would be particularly useful for this research include:

Computer vision, particularly 3D texture capture/analysis and pattern analysis, data capture and analysis, modelling and simulation - particularly statistical and numerical/AI methods such as neural networks.

The bursary will be £12,300 per annum and is not subject to UK taxes.

In addition, tuition fees will be waived for the duration of the bursary (3 years).

Eligibility

Applicants should hold a first or upper second class Honours degree or a Masters Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
