PCRI request for proposals for Individual Grants

The Pentecostal and Charismatic Research Initiative (PCRI) request for proposals (RFP) for Individual Grants is designed to provide a scholarly framework based in the social sciences and financial support for research into Pentecostalism and charismatic Christianity in four specific geographic regions: Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the former Soviet Union

Applicants may request up to $100,000 over two years (24 months) to support scholarly research, although not all projects can be supported at this level.

Doctoral students and scholars affiliated with universities, colleges, and research centers may apply.

PCRI will award up to 15 grants in this area.

$1,500,000 in grant funding is available for the individual grants RFP.

The following criteria should be considered in conceptualizing projects:

  • Topic Selection Research projects should engage topics of interest not only to Pentecostal specialists, but to a broader group of scholars interested in the dynamics of social change and the potentially dynamic role of religion in this process.
  • Funding will be limited to research that has the potential to significantly impact the big picture understanding of Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity and that addresses the role of religion in human society.
  • Research Methodology and Scholarly Collaboration The proposed research must be rigorously scientific and deeply creative in terms of ideas and the demonstrated capabilities and talents of the applicants.
  • Interdisciplinary research involving sociologists, anthropologists, economists, etc. is encouraged, if it strengthens the research design.
  • Projects involving only theological questions are not eligible under this RFP, but collaborative research involving theologians may be appropriate.
  • Geographic Focus and Limitations Proposals must be focused on one of four regions (Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the former USSR).
  • Comparative research projects are also eligible, including projects that explore the connections between Western countries and one or more of the four regions mentioned above.
  • Institutional Requirements Grants must be administered through a scholarly institution such as a university, seminary, or research center.
  • Grants will be awarded based on academic merit and not on the affiliation (secular, denomination, etc.) of the research center.

    Application Process:

Interested parties must begin the application process by submitting a letter of intent which should be no more than four single-spaced 12-point-font pages and should include the following information and must be written in English:

  • The name(s) of the Principal Investigator(s).
  • Clearly label the Letter of Intent as an application for an Individual Grant
  • The e-mail address of the principal contact person for the grant.
  • The name and address of the sponsoring institution (e.g., university, seminary, research center), and a brief description.
  • Proposed project title.
  • Approximate proposed budget
  • A clear statement of the proposed research project and its relevance to one or more of the research questions cited in this RFP.
  • A brief statement of the methodology for carrying out the proposed research project.
  • A concise statement of the importance of the research project and the contribution that it will make to the scholarly study of Pentecostal or charismatic Christianity—or, alternatively, how the study of Pentecostal/charismatic religion will advance understanding of a theoretical issue within another field of study.
  • Qualifications of the Principal Investigator(s) to implement the proposed research project.
  • A list of faculty, scholars, graduate students and other contributors to the research center's proposed plan of activity, their titles and institutional affiliations.
  • A curriculum vitae of no more than three pages of each Principal Investigator should be included
