Mo Ibrahim Foundation PhD Scholarships for African Students - School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has generously provided SOAS with two scholarships per year for African students undertaking full‐time PhD programme in the field of Governance for Development in Africa.

The scholarship provides for Fees for three years, and for accommodation and living cost for the first and third year only.

Students are expected to be on fieldwork during the second year, and to write the thesis in the third year in they country of origins.

PhD Scholarship Criteria

1. Domicile/Residency: Applicants must be domiciled (or permanent residents)in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub‐Saharan Africa.

2. Eligible Programmes

PhD Programme (Full‐time) Research undertaken by scholarship applicants must directly address or be applicable to the issue of Governance in Africa.

3. Assessment

Scholarship candidates will be assessed based on their intended research, academic merit and references. SOAS is committed to accepting only those scholarship candidates who can demonstrate an ability to complete a PhD within three, or at most, four years.

PhD Scholarship Application

  • Applications for scholarship funding are separate from applications to the School for a place of study. Therefore, separate reference letters are required for a Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship.
  • Please provide two academic references with your application.
  • The references should be able to comment on your previous research/study and how your intended research is relevant to the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship scheme. Referees should seal their letters in envelopes.
  • The letters should be submitted to SOAS directly.
  • In addition to the application form, you would need to send me a proposal of the intended research in 1000 words max. This should outline the research objectives, appropriate methods and research relevance.
  • It should also make clear the relation between the proposed research and the core themes of governance and development in sub-Saharan Africa.

    All applications, including references, must be received by 30 April of each year.
