Research For Alternative Culture Enterprises

Science postgraduate opportunities at GMIT

The Research for Alternative Culture Enterprises group (RACE) has two M.Sc research positions available for the following projects:

  • Extracting latent thermal energy from agricultural farm waste for use in culture enterprises and;
  • Assessing heat availability from municipal garden compost and determination of possible applications The main aim of these projects combined is to attain waste heat energy from the natural decomposition of agricultural and municipal garden waste.

    Simple heat exchange technologies will be developed to convert the heat into a usable form for application in horticultural operations.

    The performance of this heat will be compared to solar energy and conventional systems.

    Other possible uses will also be determined for this new heat energy source and pilot studies will be carried out.

    These projects are funded by the Department of Agriculture & Food under the Research Stimulus Fund Programme.

    The project duration is 23 months and the successful candidates will be required to register for a M.Sc. in the School of Science, GMIT.

    The practical element of the projects will be based in Mountbellow Agricultural College, while laboratory and office based work will be in GMIT's main Dublin road campus.

    Qualifications (Minimum & Desirable) and/or Required Experience:

  • The applicant must hold an honours degree in Environmental Science, Environment Resource Management, or a related discipline (2:2 or better).
  • Knowledge of agriculture waste management protocols and/or heat transfer technologies would be desirable.
  • A full driving license and own transport would also be an advantage, in addition to the ability to work in field and laboratory environments.
  • Good communication skills is essential, as is the desire to be involved in an extremely applied project.
