1. Project Officer- Animal Health

The Project Officer- Animal Health shall be responsible to and report directly to the Project Coordinator – Host Community or designate for the carrying out of his/her duties.

The purpose of the position is to provide community based animal health services and the supervision of livestock-related projects in the Turkana region.

The main responsibilities include;

  • Conduct training for community health workers on animal health diseases and disease identification.
  • Strengthen existing community based disease surveillance structures and link them to Government of Kenya Veterinary and Department.
  • To work closely with the veterinary department to facilitate deworming and vaccination of livestock against common diseases like PPR and CCPP among others
  • Conduct training for livestock marketing groups on drug supply chain management.
  • Provide support and advice to existing and new drug stores at the community level and link them up with Community Health Workers Associations.
  • To work closely with Community Development Facilitators and supervise their activities in realizing timely planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of project activities.
  • Work closely with the Project coordinator to formulate and develop needs-based proposals and strategies.
  • To be a member of the Kakuma/Turkana Project Management Team.
  • Together with the Project coordinator supervise and report on all livestock activities in the project area.

    Professional Qualifications

  • A minimum of a diploma or a degree in animal health/ veterinary medicine from a recognized institution. Experience and competencies
  • At least 3 years experience with animal health issues in a pastoralist set up is required.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the dynamics of pastoralist livelihoods, peace building and conflict resolution, preferably gained within an international NGO.
  • Practical experience in community participation processes, proposals and reports writing.
  • Excellent Computer skills, especially MS Word and MS Excel.
