Location: Kenya (Nairobi)

1. Purpose:

The number of emergencies that UNICEF responds to is increasing. So is the complexity of the response.

UNICEF ESARO benefits from having a presence in 21 countries in the region, and such presence comes with expectations to respond to natural disasters like the Horn of Africa Drought and Flood and complex emergencies seen in Somalia and Northern Uganda, to name a few.

The Regional Emergency Team is newly established within the Regional Office.

Its main responsibility is to coordinate surge capacity to the field.

This means fielding staff with very short notice. The main tools we use are database systems, such as the Global Web Roster and HRIS.

The team also fulfils important monitoring and evaluation functions, with regards to operational response and capacity building.

The Team liaises closely with the Regional Technical Advisors and the Division of Human Resources, New York Headquarters.

The Regional Emergency Focal Point in ESAR is also responsible for overall capacity building and the development and implementation of a Regional Rapid Response Mechanism.

Main Developmental Opportuities:

  • Gain experience in emergency staffing;
  • Gain experience in the usage of the UNICEF internal database system and MS Office;
  • Gain experience in working in highly demanding and volatile staffing environment.
  • Familiarize him/herself and gain an understanding of UNICEF's emergency response procedures; and
  • Gain an understanding of UN Staff security systems and levels.

    The internship will also assist the student in making decisions and plans relevant to their educational and career goals.

    Main Duties And Repsonsabilities:

  • Database searches and analysis of emergency rosters;
  • Update the candidates profiles on the Global Web Roster;
  • Liaising with external consultants;
  • Pre-screen of some applications, participate in interviews, request technical assessments; and
  • Administrational duties such as assist the team in maintaining operational staffing matrixes, draft communications, and file documents; and
  • Any additional duties requested by HR ESARO.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Be enrolled in a programme at the Masters level, preferably in International Relations/Affairs, Political Science, Human Resources Communications or Business Administration.

    Fluency in English. Knowledge of one other UN working language an advantage.

    UNICEF competencies:

  • Technical - Very good analytical skills and ability to synthesize concepts and material into clear and concise thoughts.
  • Technical - Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent understanding of and knowledge of software such as but not limited to Lotus based applications, HTML, Word, Excel.
  • Managing resources - Organizes and manages information to achieve defined goals and optimum results.
  • Communication - Effectively presents thoughts and ideas including complex technical concepts, in a clear, concise, and readily understood manner, both verbally and in writing. Listens to and acknowledges others' perspectives and views.
  • Flexibility - Works effectively on multiple assignments simultaneously and adapts to changing demands and circumstances. Good communication and interpersonal skills – able to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
