GIZ Kenya Health Sector Programme-Programme Officer – Healthcare Waste Management Vacancy

Location: Nairobi Women’s Hospital

Background

In September, the German International Cooperation (GIZ) Health Sector Programme and Nairobi Women’s Hospital signed a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement on Hospital Waste Management.

The objective of the PPP is to enhance private health care providers’ facility based waste management practices and promote sustainable biomedical waste disposal options.

Scope of Work

The programme officer will be based at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital, and will support with the assessment, situation analysis, strategy development, capacity building and implementation of the PPP project in accordance with the workplan.

a. Support the Nairobi Women’s Hospital in the set up and operation of the new incinerator and with all legal requirements needed for the operation of the incinerator

b. Participate in the preparation of different trainings for healthcare waste management, including the preparation of educational training materials and training courses.

c. Train selected health personnel in the private sector on safe and sound practices in health care waste management in conformity to the existing health sector guidelines on waste management and infection control.

d. Support the set up of an efficient disposal logistic for healthcare waste and offer onsite support of the participating hospitals

e. Data collection, analysis and Monitoring & Evaluation of the project indicators, ensuring all key deliverables are met Preparation of monthly activity and project reports in the format and scope provided

f. Conduct market business intelligence as pertaining to healthcare waste management (HCWM); carry out cost benefit analysis on the project

g.Planning and coordination of budgetary allocations for the project

h. Developing project proposals

i. Support and assistance of the international healthcare waste expert

j. Act as liaison between Nairobi Women’s Hospital and all key project stakeholders and participate in policy makers’ platforms in promotion of best practices in biomedical waste management in the sector.

Requirements

a. Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, environmental engineering, hygiene, or Public health comparable

b. At least 2 years’ experience in project management

c. Flexible with high tolerance and ability to work in fast paced and challenging environment

d. Excellent command of MS-Office

e. Post-graduate qualification or experience in marketing or a business related field an advantage

f. First-hand experience in waste management, experience with medical waste, environmental infection control or hospital hygiene is an advantage

g. Creativity, strong communication and interpersonal skills with high inter-cultural sensitivity

i. Proven supervisory and negotiation skills with the ability to work with senior administrators and medical staff.

j. Experience in working both independently and in a team-oriented environment
