Construction Clerk of Works UNON

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General.

The post is located in the Facilities Management and Transportation Section, Support Services Section, UNON.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Construction Responsibilities:

  • Assist the project manager in reviewing the contractor’s plans and specifications;
  • Inspect all materials going into the project for quality and adherence to the specifications;
  • Inspect the construction site and its surroundings to ensure compliance with guidelines on environmental management and housekeeping on the site, and to identify any unexpected issues of environmental concern that need to be managed.
  • Monitor, the inspection of the workmanship and practices of the Contractor and or crews engaged in the construction, the construction work schedules to check that progress is maintained as proposed,monitor safety at the construction site insofar as the execution of the construction work is concerned.

    Administrative Services:

  • A attend various meetings where required to and maintain the Project Diary on site.
  • At substantial completion, prepare draft “punch-lists” for approval, monitor contractor’s necessary rectification of the faults noted in good time.
  • Assist the Project Manager in closing the project. Core Competencies: Professionalism:

  • Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges.

    Qualifications:

  • Higher Diploma in Building and Civil Engineering from a reputable Institution.
  • A minimum of seven years of relevant experience as a Clerk of Works in the construction industry, preferably with specific experience in the Kenyan/East African architecture and construction market.
  • Previous experience is necessary with Health and Safety requirements in the local construction industry, including validation of Contractor’s Health and Safety Plans and in monitoring the site safety performance during construction.
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English required.
  • Oral Kiswahili is an added advantage.
  • Excellent computer skills required.
