Applicants must be citizens of an African country other than South Africa, who do not possess citizenship or permanent residence status in South Africa.

Although the HSRC will endeavour to facilitate the process, it will be the candidate’s responsibility to secure a work permit in accordance with South African Government legislation and procedures.

The period of appointment will be between 6 months and 5 years.

Key responsibilities:

  • Co-ordinating and undertaking research projects, leading to the production of scholarly outputs;
  • Identifying research partners and stakeholders who can become part of the unit’s research network;
  • Participating in public debates as part of disseminating project outputs;
  • Formulating grant proposals for major long term research projects;
  • Mentoring and research capacity development of young researchers;
  • Publishing in refereed journals.

    In addition, the successful candidates will possess:

  • Extensive experience and publications in peer-reviewed international journals
  • Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
  • A strong user-orientation, based on a commitment to social research that makes a difference;
  • The ability and enthusiasm to engage as a team player in multidisciplinary research, to manage research teams, and to mentor and train their members;
  • A keenness to engage and facilitate stakeholder dialogue
  • An ability and willingness to communicate research findings in an accessible manner to the broader public through the media;
  • Sound computer literacy.

    Qualifications:

    A relevant PhD level qualification in social sciences, ideally in economics, economic development, political economy or related subjects.
