  • It strives to address the economic and social needs of women and young girl’s through the core programmatic focus areas of Gender Equality, Economic and Social Empowerment, Sexual Reproductive Health, Girls Education, and Youth Leadership Development.

    General Job Description

  • The General Secretary of the YWCA is responsible for implementation of policies set by the Board of Directors as well as annual goals and objectives, financial, program, and administrative management of the organization, including its branch offices.

  • Guidance and direction is provided by the board president and the board.

  • The General Secretary is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.

  • The GS will have main duties and responsibilities of leadership/ board liaison, operational planning and management, team development functions, human resource management, fiscal management, stakeholder’s relationship, communication and public relations, resource mobilization, and other undertakings prescribed by the YWCA Board of Directors.

    Main duties and responsibilities

  • Carry out board relationship function as a liaison between board of directors and employees;

  • Develop an operational plans which are consistent with the mission, goals, policies of the organization as adopted in its policy setting membership meeting and according to its responsibilities as an affiliated member of the World YWCA;

  • Performs managerial duties for administrative staff and those not under the supervision of department heads;

  • Ensure that all financial matters are dealt in accordance to the Accounting policy of the organization;

  • Build/ strengthen effective partnership and networking with stakeholders, including members, the World YWCA, the African Regional YWCAs , umbrella organizations in
    which YWCA is a member of , the donors community as well as other constitutes in attaining YWCAs goals as well as common objective and be the official contact person of the Association;

  • Designs effective communication and public relational tools;

  • Prepare and submit quarterly and annual reports to the board of directors as required;

  • Responsible for the representation of the organization on matters pertaining to legal issues that will directly or indirectly involve the organization , protects the organization’s legal interests and maintains its operations within the law;

  • The General Secretary shall perform other duties as assigned by the YWCA Board of Directors.

    Job Requirements


    Minimum qualification

  • Attainment of Masters in Social Science and 5 years of work experience or a bachelor’s degree in social science fields and at least 7 years of relevant experience in managerial position in a non-profit organization is an imperative.

    Desired characteristics and skills

  • Proven leadership skills developed through at least 4 years in management/ supervisory positions.

  • Good organizational development, interpersonal, and communication experience

  • Fund-raising, grant proposal writing and donor relations,

  • In-depth knowledge of the management process, effective leadership and organizational skills

  • Ability to raise the visibility of the organization through successful marketing including expansion of the membership base, effective communication, and partnership building

  • Financial/accounting skills to manage and the organization’s budget

  • Strong interpersonal skills that include the ability to inspire and motivate; effective at conflict management and effective oral and writing skills

  • Ability to plan organization-wide activities (setting objectives, developing strategies, budgeting, developing policies and procedures, and organizing the functions necessary to accomplish the activities)

  • Administration and personnel management skills the ability to foster a healthy organizational culture, to encourage teamwork and collaboration;

  • Good English language skills (writing and speaking) and computer skills
