    Scope of Work

  • In most refugee settings, the education of key refugee children is often seen as a difficult undertaking and children, parents and organizations struggle to carry out their work as a result of operating within vulnerable contexts.

  • The host communities around the refugee camps also struggle with low learning outcomes.

  • Given the project context, and the extent of trauma, mental health challenges and other barriers providing marginalized girls with access to quality education is one of our priorities.

  • Strengthening literacy any numeracy is also a critical component of improving opportunities for girls to learn and succeed in life.

  • The purpose of this assignment is to capacity build and support the development of high-quality numeracy manuals for training teacher in upper primary and secondary schools.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development and review of the numeracy skills training content in consultation with the WUSC team

  • In consultation with WUSC Education Advisor design a conceptual framework for the Numeracy training manual for upper grades and secondary with clear objectives and structure.

  • Develop the Numeracy (Mathematics) instructional content with focus on functional numeracy and with gender lens.

  • Participate in the validation process of the draft manual and thereafter incorporate agreed changes into the final draft with possibility of conducting a ToT.

  • Review and design relevant approaches at the teacher training level.


    The Key Deliverables for the consultancy are as follows:

  • Gender mainstreamed numeracy training manuals

  • Training reports

  • A learning measurement framework and maybe observation tools

  • Training ToT/coaches on the use of the manual


  • Master in Education, specialised in maths, at least a degree in math

  • At least 10 years’ experience in
    teaching/tutoring/training especially teachers, developing training manuals for numeracy and other numeracy materials.

  • Experience in material development or training for similar interventions.

  • Experience in authoring numeracy training materials/Books/guides, training manuals etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to train teachers and experience in developing Gender sensitive training manuals

  • Strong English communication and writing skills

  • Kiswahili language skills or other relevant local language skills are a significant asset.

    Functional Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of refugee education landscape in Kenya

  • Experience in conducting teacher training

  • Proficiency in use of basic computer software

  • Ability to work independently and produce high quality outputs

  • Sound judgement, strategic thinking and the ability to manage competing priorities

  • Demonstrate integrity by modeling WUSC’s values and ethical standards and safeguarding policies

  • Displays cultural gender, religion, race nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability

  • Solid understanding of the concepts of gender mainstreaming and equality in the KEEP context (Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps and surrounding host communities).
