Job Description

  • The World Food Programme is the food assistance branch of the United Nations and the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security.

    Organizational Context

  • The focus of the World Food Program (WFP) has evolved from food security and hunger avoidance to nutrition security, social protection, and socioeconomic development of vulnerable populations. The next logical and timely step in WFP’s journey is to embrace systems thinking and a food systems approach across the full spectrum of its thinking and action, thereby becoming an intentional global force for food systems transformation.

  • Such a transformation is critical to ensuring sustainable healthy diets for all and a zero-hunger world. Embracing systems thinking will bring greater coherence and integration to WFP’s work and intentionality to WFP’s contribution to food systems transformation.

  • Globally, there are many emerging strategic tracks within WFP that represent leverage points for it to contribute to food systems transformation more effectively. Asset creation and livelihoods are a central part of it. They address immediate food needs through cash, voucher, or food transfers while promoting the building or rehabilitation of assets that will improve long-term food security and resilience. Thereby they aim at addressing underlying vulnerabilities and help develop resilience capacities, as well as response strategies to different shocks and stressors.

    Job Purpose

  • This role will contribute to the delivery of the primary support to the relevant programme officers in overall project management, including the design and management of capacity building activities, knowledge management and documentation of learning, and reporting: to facilitate the adoption of effective and appropriate post-harvest loss reduction and climate-sensitive livelihood approaches, with an emphasis on the documentation and reporting of knowledge, best practices and evidence from programme implementation.



  • A University degree in any of the following fields: agricultural economics, agribusiness, environment, development, social sciences, or related field.

    Working Experience:

  • At least 2 years of work experience in the humanitarian sector

  • Experience in partnerships with universities

  • Experience with the creation of learning and advocacy materials

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook).

  • Knowledge of WFP’s work in Food for assets / Asset Creation / Post-Harvest management is desirable.

  • Language: Fluency (level C) in the English language and the duty station’s language, if different.

    Key Accountabilities

    What you will do:

  • Support the Food System (FS) unit to oversee implementation of capacity-building FFA and 3PA annual grants.

  • Support the partnership with different universities in the region to implement the 3PA activities such as Integrated Context Analysis, Seasonal livelihood programming and Community based participatory planning.

  • Support the Regional Resilience Coordinator in the roll out of the Resilience Building’s Blocks Initiative.

  • Assist in the Food System’ sub-section coordination between small holder market support (SAMS), hydroponics, resilience and livelihoods.

  • Enable the Food System team in its knowledge management efforts, including generating short, succinct learning and advocacy materials.

  • Support the organization of consultative and partnership forums.

  • Support the production of briefing notes and talking points to a high professional standard.

  • Work closely with Knowledge Management focal points in the Unit to ensure that Food Systems Team sites are populated with up-to-date documentation.

  • Support the partnership and networking efforts of the programme officers.

  • Lead the preparatory and follow-up work for training workshops; ensure training materials and venues are well presented and organized, provide on-site substantive support to workshops and consultations.

  • Collaborate with the Research, Assessment and Monitoring teams to support real-time learning exercises, TO baselines, mid-term reviews and final evaluations in the area of livelihoods and asset creation.

  • Work closely with the programme officers to prepare inputs for reports, trends and think-pieces.

  • Assist programme officers with the gathering of data, market information and emerging thinking in the area to improve the regional understanding in the technical area.

  • Assist to maintain records /statistics /reports of programme activities within the region.

  • Perform other related duties as required.
