WHO Technical Officer - Neglected Tropical Diseases - Jobs in South Sudan

South Sudan is one of the four WHO AFRO priority countries with heavy burden of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). The objective of the Programme is to accelerate and scale up NTD interventions in South Sudan, focusing on helping the country to timely achieve set global indicators for elimination and control of Neglected Tropical Diseases.


  • Support the MOH in the development and implementation of annual NTD operational plans for both case-managed and preventive chemotherapy NTDs.
  • Support the MOH in completing mapping for SCH, LF, STH and Trachoma within the established timelines.
  • Strengthen the capacity of the MOH in scaling up NTD treatment through Mass Drugs Administration and case management in all endemic counties
  • Support the MOH in compilation and submission of NTD annual joint drugs application package for the MOH and other implementing partners
  • Strengthen the capacity of the MOH GWEP in interrupting transmission of Guinea Worm disease in South Sudan and prepare the country for GW certification in line with global eradication targets
  • Heighten Guinea Worm disease national awareness and market country-wide awareness of “CASH REWARD” for reporting Guinea Worm disease cases to accelerate elimination in South Sudan
  • Strengthen integrated management of the NTD treatment through MDAs and case management8) Develop/ensure implementation of NTD Annual Operation Plans in line with the 5-year NTD Master Plan
  • Support the MOH to coordinate monthly National NTD Task Force meetings as well as regional and National Review Meetings
  • Support overall NTD strategic position and related actions; ensure all relevant actors are informed of these decisions
  • Support surveillance of NTD including community-based surveillance for Guinea Worm disease in endemic villages
    and country-wide surveillance through the IDSR and strengthen surveillance and management of NTDs among special groups in South Sudan: This includes the Refugees camps, IDP camps and Protection of Civilian camps
  • Organize NTD cross-border surveillance and coordination meetings with neighbouring countries and track population movement either as refugees or returnees
  • Support the MOH and partners in management of epidemiological data for all NTDs for a prompt response and documentation as well as reporting to WHO
  • Supports collection of suspected Guinea worm specimen from the field for laboratory confirmation at the CDC


  • Advanced university degree (Master’s level or above) in medicine, public health or any other health-related field. First university degree in medicine or public health from an accredited/recognized institute.
  • Specialized training in tropical health/medicine or epidemiology or related fields.
  • At least seven years of related experience, at the national and international levels in NTDs management, including Guinea Worm disease, and in-depth understanding of the certification process, elimination and the road towards achieving global eradication. Good experience in developing and promoting collaborative partnerships in a complex and humanitarian setting.
  • Desirable: Relevant work experience in WHO, other UN agencies, recognized humanitarian organizations, and relevant non-governmental organizations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working on NTDs including Guinea Worm disease
  • Ability to work in a complex environment
  • In-depth knowledge of the certification processes for the elimination and achievement of global eradication principals for NTDs
  • Excellent diplomacy skills and ability to work closely with the MOH and supporting implementing partners
