U.S. Embassy in Ghana Passport and Citizenship Assistant Jobs


  • Basic Function of the Position – Supervises three LE Staff members and oversees the daily work of three Eligible Family Members (EFM) Consular Assistants/Associates in the American Citizen services (ACS) Unit covering daily services such as passport and consular report of birth abroad (CRBA) applications, as well as all special citizen services including U.S. citizen arrests, immigration detentions, victims of crime, welfare and whereabouts, child abductions, and deaths, and estate issues.

  • Incumbent is post's recognized expert on all aspects of operational American Citizen Services ( ACS) services as well as special consular services/assistance to U.S. citizens in distress. Personally handles complex or unusual cases.

  • Provides daily work guidance to entry level officers (ELOs), three LE staff members, three Eligible Family members (EFM) Consular Assistants/Associates, summer/winter hires, and interns.

    Qualifications and Evaluations



  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in work involving the application of complex regulatory material and extensive public contact, or other closely related experience, including at least one year of handling supervisory responsibilities required.

  • Some examples of supervisory responsibilities include personnel management, scheduling and process oversight, and budget control.

    Job Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the State Department mission and priorities on service to the U.S. citizens. policies and instructions, Vienna Convention, The Hague Convention on Child Abduction, local laws, practices and information sources.

  • Extensive knowledge of Ghanaian civil and customary laws relating to marriage, divorce and adoption. Extensive knowledge of Ghanaian law enforcement, hospital, and funeral procedures.

  • Standard
    knowledge of Ghanaian documents such as tax documents, passport, school, civil, and religious documents.

    Education Requirements:

  • Completion of two years university studies is required.


  • Language:Fluent English skills required (Level IV) Written/Speaking/Reading is required. (Language proficiency will be tested).

    Skills and Abilities:

  • Uses tact and good judgment with the public under difficult and sensitive circumstances. Plans and organizes own workload as well as that of subordinates.

  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills. Renders advice with detachment and objectivity.

  • Develops and maintains range of working and high-level contacts in both the U.S. and Ghana.

  • Calculates workload counts and statistics. Excellent interviewing, analytical and writing skills.
