Duties

  • Under the direct supervision of the Public Diplomacy Officer, act as the American Spaces Coordinator, to include directing the activities, supporting programming, and overseeing the operating budget of the American Spaces in Cape Town and other cities in co-operation with the implementing partner to advance U.S. policy goals and support Mission Public Diplomacy objectives.

    Qualifications and Evaluations

    Requirements:

    Experience:

  • Minimum three years of progressively responsible experience in the local business, educational, government, cultural or NGO sector, with evidence of project implementation and management, customer service, public speaking, and computer skills.

    Job Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with South Africa’s political, economic, social, and educational structures, institutions, political parties, cultural movements and history, and key figures in these fields. Basic awareness of contemporary U.S. affairs including political affairs, cultural movements, and history, and key figures in these fields. Basic awareness of contemporary U.S. affairs including politics, education, arts and culture, and social issues.

  • Evidence of planning, organizing events or project management, customer service, problem solving, creating informational content, monitoring project impact and budgets.

    Education Requirements:

  • Mandatory: Bachelor's degree in Arts, Humanities, Commerce/Management Sciences, Journalism, or Education is required.

    Evaluations:

    Language:

  • Mandatory: Level IV (Fluent) reading/writing/speaking) of English language is required.

    Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent service orientation and cross-cultural interpersonal skills. Ability to work and manage a team.

  • Ability to conceptualize plan and implement events and
    projects on deadline.

  • Ability to speak well before large groups. Ability to operate multimedia equipment. High level of computer literacy is required.

  • Use of social media platforms and videoconferencing tools, e.g., Facebook Live, Zoom, Google Meet, Teams.

  • Use of Microsoft Excel to develop and manage budgets. Use of Microsoft Office to write grant proposals and reports.

  • Use of Microsoft Outlook for daily email and calendar management. Accuracy is required, though a specific typing speed is not required.
