  • The United Purpose energy programme is currently centred in Malawi, where we are seen as a sector leader and have been responsible for over 500,000 households accessing cleaner cooking technologies and 25,000 households accessing solar lighting.

  • This includes the establishment of Malawi’s first smart metered solar-PV micro-grid, as well as four village level solar kiosk businesses.

  • We are the Secretariat of the National Cookstove Steering Committee and have taken a leading role in reaching the Government of Malawi’s 2 million stoves by 2020 achievement.

  • We believe in market-based approaches where possible, but also have a strong leave-no-one-behind philosophy, as demonstrated by our innovative integration of energy access with the Social Cash Transfer programme, reaching over 150,000 ultra-poor households to date.

    Aim of Post:

  • The Global Energy Programme Manager will provide strategic and technical leadership in the delivery and development of the UP energy programme in Malawi and beyond.

  • They will be expected to oversee the implementation of UPs existing energy portfolio in Malawi to donor requirements, continue to develop the programme based on evolving best practice and the changing landscape in Malawi, mobilise resources for future programming and oversee UP Malawi’s carbon finance work for cookstoves and boreholes.

  • The role will also lead to the global expansion of UP’s global energy portfolio.

    Responsibilities will include:

  • Working within the Malawi Country strategy, set the energy programme direction and strategy

  • Identify new opportunities to improve the energy situation in Malawi and beyond through innovative programming

  • Maintain long term donor relations to ensure continuation of existing funding for
    the energy programme

  • Keep abreast of new funding opportunities and develop narrative and financial proposals for existing and new funders both in country and globally

  • Diversify funding sources, including carbon finance, impact investors and traditional development partners

  • Act as the primary focal point for all energy programme donors in Malawi

  • Lead the development and submission of donor technical and financial reports, in collaboration with energy and operations colleagues

  • Review and submit internal monthly financial reports and project cashflow forecasts

  • The ideal candidate will be highly motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision; have a background in energy, the environment and/or development sector; have excellent technical, communication, analysis and project management skills. They will also have:

  • Relevant Degree level qualification in energy, development, environment

  • Demonstrated strategic judgement, planning, co-ordination and prioritization skills

  • Demonstrated communication and team-working skills

  • Self-starter, capable of innovatively developing the programme

  • Attention to details and flexible approach to work

  • Demonstrated cross cultural communication skills
