Org. Setting and Reporting

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

  • The UNEP Governance Affairs Office/ Governing Bodies Unit internship is for six (6) months.
    The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
    Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

  • In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

    Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager, Governing Bodies Unit, Governance Affairs Office and working remotely, the intern will work with and learn from a team of experienced professionals in the area of planning and coordinating events, communication and outreach with and to member states ahead and during the resumed session of the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2.) and the special session to commemorate UNEP 50th anniversary (UNEP@50) which is scheduled on 3-4 March 2022. The intern will be offered the opportunity to:

  • Assist the programme manager in coordinating the logistics for UNEA.5.2 and UNEP@50

  • Assist the programme manager in preparing and coordinating the leadership dialogue during UNEA.5.2 and UNEP@50

  • Assist the programme manager in technical services for the meetings of Governing Bodies in the run up to UNEA5.2

  • Prepare draft agenda and written summaries for the UNEA.5.2 task force meetings.

  • Assist in drafting/tracking responses for the SGB mail account and log system, including responses in coordination with other UNEP divisions and the Executive Office

  • Undertake such other tasks as may be assigned by the Programme Manager and other colleagues such as the preparation
    of communication material promoting the above work.

Places team agenda before personal agenda. Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position. Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

    Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For these internships, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

  • NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
