UN World Food Programme Programme Assistant (Gender and Food Systems) Jobs in Kenya

About WFP

  • The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetime. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

  • The WFP Regional Bureau for Eastern and Central Africa (RBN) is based in Nairobi and provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization, and management support to WFP operations and activities in ten countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.

    Organizational Context

  • The focus of World Food Program (WFP) has evolved from food security and hunger avoidance to nutrition security, social protection, and socioeconomic development of vulnerable populations. The next logical and timely step in WFP’s journey is to embrace systems thinking and a food systems approach across the full spectrum of its thinking and action, thereby become an intentional global force for food systems transformation.

  • Such a transformation is critical to ensuring sustainable healthy diets for all and a zero-hunger world. Embracing systems thinking will bring greater coherence and integration to WFP’s work and intentionality to WFP’s contribution to food systems transformation.

  • Globally, there are many emerging strategic tracks within WFP that represent leverage points for it to contribute to food systems transformation more effectively. One of these strategic tracks is supporting women as pillars of the food system and agents of transformative change. Women play multiple roles in food systems, as custodians of household food security, food producers, farm managers, and traders. Their roles are often invisible, or at best, at the margins of food systems transformation efforts.

  • They remain disproportionately affected by climate change due to constraints on their roles as vital stakeholders in resource management, preparedness, and mitigation activities. They lack meaningful access to decision making and leadership spaces in climate-related policies, programs, and emergency responses; and they are disproportionately affected by social and cultural norms that prevent them from being empowered

    Job Purpose

  • Regional Bureau for Eastern Africa is committed to shifting this narrative through supporting country offices to achieve three strategic objectives:

  • Equitable access to and control over the means to achieve food security and nutrition
