Job Description

  • The Mitchel Group Inc is a US contracting firm that helps humanitarian and development organization and private business in a wide range of management solutions to ensure the efficient use of resources. The Mitchel Group has been present in Ethiopia since 2018 and implements MELA and PLSO projects funded by the USAID. The PLSO Activity is dedicated to support the USAID Implementing Partners by providing security related information and guidance to inform their decisions in the context of operating in highly insecure environment.

    Position Description

  • The Media Analysis Coordinator position will build and support the overall capacity of the technical team of media analysts to produce better open-source reporting of security related news in the country to support the security and safety of USAID/Ethiopia implementing partners throughout the country.

  • The Media Analysis Coordinator will be directly managed by the Chief of Party of the Partner Liaison Security Operations (PLSO) Activity. The Media Analysis Coordinator will develop tools and methodologies for more efficient media analysis, support confirmation of security incidents, support the development of security and other contingency plans for USAID partners, and support the analysis of social media for the PLSO Activity.

  • In addition, the Media Analysis Coordinator will edit and review open-source news reporting from the technical team and other reports as required. The position will likely take on other tasks as required and needed to advance the objectives of the PLSO Activity.

    Main Tasks:

  • Develop tools, methodologies, and processes for media (news) analysis for more efficient and effective reporting.

  • Provide quality assurance and editing functions for all PLSO reports, as needed.

  • Build capacity of technical analysts around media analysis and triangulation of security incidents.

  • Support social media analysis team in mapping out reliable media outlets and follow ups

  • Support the development of security plans for USAID implementing partners as requested.

  • Conduct periodic travel and qualitative research as requested by the Chief of Party to support information and analysis
    functions of the PLSO Activity.

  • Develop a large network of media and other contacts to support triangulation and analysis functions of the PLSO Activity.

  • Work in close coordination with the Deputy Chief of Party to support the development of quality content and formatting of the weekly reports produced for partners by the PLSO Activity.

  • Work closely with the data specialist and the social media team in identifying and analyzing of social media posts selected for reporting

  • Any other technical functions that may be required to support the objectives of the PLSO Activity.

    Reporting and supervision

  • Directly reports to the DCOP.

  • Works closely with all the technical members and the operation section of PLSO

  • Period of Performance: September 2021 – August 2022

    Job Requirements

    Minimum Requirements:

  • Fluency in written and verbal English, and Amharic are required. Ability to speak other Ethiopian and regional languages, is an asset.

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in journalism, political science, peace and security studies, or other related degrees.

  • Background and experience working directly in journalism, communications, and research in a security-related undertaking

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in fields related to journalism and/or security in Ethiopia.

  • Excellent interpersonal and critical thinking skills.

  • Dynamic personality and ability to work under pressure and quickly.

  • Experience working with projects funded by major donors, such as USAID, EU, or UN.

  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Training and experience in conflict sensitive programming.
