Thanda is a Non-Profit Organisation in South Africa. Through our innovative Early Childhood Development, After-School, Organic Farming, and Creative Learning Programmes we reach over 1200 individuals daily.

Thanda’s Education Department is responsible for the creation, documentation, and execution of our Creative Learning Curriculum (CLC) which is central to our programmes. The Education Department is currently looking to fill two internship positions for 2019. These are:

Creative Learning Curriculum Intern: This role will be responsible for compiling and organizing our existing CLC lesson plans, story studies, and learning activities.

They will work with our Programme Director and other Education staff to select the content that best represent the CLC and Thanda’s mission, in order to craft a complete and unified year-long curriculum for external distribution.

Education Intern: This role will be responsible for facilitating the day-to-day logistics of implementing and expanding our CLC, primarily in the After-School Programme. They will work closely with our Arts and Education Mentor to craft weekly plans for all A-S facilitators and grade levels, train facilitators on those plans, and ensure that all materials are in place for the programming.

These positions are ideal people interested in alternative education, development work, and looking to gain work experience a dynamic NGO.

    Thanda’s After-school Programme:
  • Established in 2008, as Thanda’s flagship programme, the After-School Programme now involves over 760 students in grades R through grade 10.
  • Sessions take place immediately following the school day, within existing community buildings, are facilitated by local staff hired from the community, and each participant is provided with a nutritious meal during every After-School session.
  • The Creative Learning Curriculum is at the core of Thanda’s After-School Programme.

    Requirements:
  • Interns require a bachelor's degree (in any field) and a strong interest in alternative education.
  • Experience in education and/or alternative education is preferred but not necessary. We are looking for people with high levels of comfort and fluidity across a wide range of subject matter, including literature, the sciences, history, and creative arts.
  • Interns need to be enthusiastic, organized, curious, and resilient learners who embody our Game-changing skills, and are prepared to lead by example.
  • Interns must be willing to commit to 1 year.

    Life on the South Coast:
  • Thanda is based in Hibberdene, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, about one hour’s drive south of Durban city centre.
  • Volunteers typically stay in Pumula, a village just south of Hibberdene along the coast of the Indian Ocean.
  • This is a perfect opportunity for someone looking for a seaside lifestyle; swimming, surfing, hiking, and simply enjoying the beautiful nature on the South Coast.

    Remuneration And Costs:
  • This is a voluntary position.
  • A stipend will be provided to cover basic housing, food, and transport costs.
  • Volunteers will be able to travel during the entitled to 6 weeks of vacation time during of school holidays.
  • Volunteers usually choose to travel during this time.
