Terre des hommes Psychosocial Assistants Jobs in Dadaab, KenyaOrganizational BackgroundTerre des hommes (Tdh) launched its activities in Kenya in January 2011.
Tdh provides support to children in Dadaab refugee camp and in Korogocho slums.
In response to the Dadaab Refugee protracted crisis, Tdh projects deliver child protection interventions and support to children in alternative care arrangements, provisions of case management and psychosocial services to vulnerable children, strengthening community-based structures as well as building advocacy efforts on child protection issues.
General description of the position
The main purpose of the position is to carry out an array of age and gender appropriate psychosocial activities for children and families and asylum seeking in Dadaab Refugee camps while respecting their culture and contextual sensitivities.
The activities are integrated in the Dadaab protection system and humanitarian coordination practices and guidelines.
The PSS Assistant will support children and families referred by Tdh case workers and other actors with specific target for unaccompanied and separated minors and GBV survivors in Dadaab Refugee camps.
The purpose is to strengthen the beneficiary’s ability to develop the necessary skills to cope with the stressful situations in the camps.
Provide psychosocial support for refugee children and adolescent in need of protection intervention in Dadaab refugee camps and the host community villages.
Work within close collaboration with MHPSS advisor who will guide and supervise PSS interventions as technical adviser.
Organize, plan and conduct specific activities for psychosocial well-being and building resilience for children and their families.
Conduct awareness sessions on child protection issues and other issues affecting the protection and well-being of children.
Work in close collaboration with Case Management and Empowerment team to address specific PSS needs for children, families and adolescents.
Liaise with other PSS actors available in the camp and identify appropriate external PSS activities.
Establish and maintain positive and efficient relations with beneficiaries, community members, partners and all other key actors.
Identify vulnerable youth and children in need of protection or support and make internal
referrals if needed.
To provide psychosocial support to the selected medium and high-risk cases or cases that need mental health interventions.
Conduct monthly Symposiums, individual counselling, group therapy, play therapy and Family therapy to children identified with psychosocial distress.
Participate in need assessments and project evaluations aiming at contributing to the development of the child protection program strategy for the refugee community project in Dadaab refugee complex and in the villages of the host communities.
Provide assistance to psychosocial senior officer in training and supervising the CP team and community-based structures on the management of children and families with basic psychosocial and mental concerns.
Train the lay counsellor, Animators and CFS supervisors on Psychological first aid and
Write daily and weekly reports of his/her activities as needed and address them to the line manager.
Ensure proper data collection and correct enter to the data base.
Take all safety and security measures necessary when conducting activities outside the facilitiesto ensure safety of children.
Willing to work with a flexible working schedule if needed.
Perform any other job-related duties as requested by the line manager.
Keep professional boundaries.
Attend all weekly planning and staff meetings both at the camp and Dadaab level.
In collaboration with other staff, organize activities so that beneficiaries can have access to training opportunities, develop their skills, explore their interests and participate in recreational events.
Always maintain strict confidentiality regarding information and data of beneficiaries
Promote, and ensure project activities are in-line with, child protection principles.
Ensure the project activities are integrated in the Dadaab child protection system and humanitarian coordination practices and guidelines.
Report serious cases of abuse on children identified by the project team to the management team. Strict confidentiality must be respected.
Coordination and representation
Work in close collaboration with Tdh partners and other key actors
Coordinate with other Tdh sectors to ensure implementation of standardized activities and with other departments (program and support) of Tdh in Dadaab as necessary.
Participate in interagency coordination fora and meetings in her/his field of expertise, when relevant and necessary.
Work with the Psychosocial Senior Officer to provide accurate and timely activity reports.
Maintain and ensure a culture of strict confidentiality between Tdh staff and non Tdh employees.
Abuse Prevention Policy – Operational Risk Management
Commit to respect Tdh Risk Management Policies including
Child Safeguarding Policy, Safety and Security Policy and Anti-Fraud/Corruption Policy, Whistle Blowing Policy.
Commit to ensure the best implementation possible of the Tdh Risk Management Policies.
Commit to inform supervisors and to deal with any cases, allegations, or possibility of transgression, even potential, of the Tdh Risk Management Policies.
Staff employed to work in Tdh will be expected to have
Professional conduct that reflects proper behavior in accordance with local culture and tradition.
Ensure the moral protection of the name of Terre des hommes and defend in all circumstance
Commits to observe discretion on any information related to the organization functioning and beneficiary related issues.
He/she will conduct his or her duties in respect of the Charter of Terre des hommes and the Tdh Child Protection Policy.
Professional University degree in psychology, counseling, social work or similar field and at least 2-year experience working in a similar position with children.
Applicants who have national higher diploma in PSS with at least 3 years relevant experience are equally eligible to apply.
Experience in use of community-based approaches for the management of psychosocial and mental health issues.
Experience in application of innovative/creative and evidence based psychosocial methodologies in managing mental health issues.
Experience in case management including management of case conferences.
Project reporting and evaluation experience.
Staff supervision experience.
Previous experience with Tdh or another child protection organization is desirable.
Knowledge of key child protection issues, system and best practices.
Experience working with extremely vulnerable individuals and SGBV Survivors in particular, is an asset.
Required qualities: proactive, autonomous, rigorous, organized, good communication and interpersonal skills.
Competency in computer applications and packages with Good IT knowledge (Microsoft Office, Internet).
Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
Ability to communicate in Somali is a plus
