Job Purpose

  • To be accountable for the credit risk management function (e.g., credit evaluation, concentration risk, industry exposure, etc.) for Business Clients in province in line with the broader BCC SA Credit and BCC Group Risk objectives.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

    Influence the provincial business strategy:

  • Provides input to determine the provincial risk appetite in line with the broader BCC SA Credit and BCC Group Risk objectives.

  • Contributes to the development and improvement of the Group-wide credit risk management strategy and framework by providing key provincial insights.

  • Leverages and optimises people, resources, business and risk controls in line with market potential, to maximise business growth within risk appetite, retention and profitability targets across the province.

  • Accountable for identifying specific provincial opportunities as required in support of the BCC SA strategy for the province.

    Risk management (support growth and contain loss):

  • Analyses risk to determine the qualitative and quantitative risk exposures by means of qualitative impact studies and quantitative risk modelling.

  • Empowers credit team in support of the new business strategy within the province’s agreed growth and risk appetite objectives and monitors progress.

  • Responsible for recommendations for proactive risk management decisions to manage losses, risk exposure.

  • Manages and review existing account management strategies.

  • Accountable for driving credit decisions within the prescribed provincial risk appetite in support of the overall RBB provincial income statement.

  • Owns and drives the process of embedding the credit risk frameworks throughout the business area by regularly engaging with all levels of leadership and management to help them understand the benefits of looking at their worlds through a credit risk management lens.

  • Continuously evaluates the external environment and assess the impact on the area's activities. Where required, discuss any changes which will result in an overall strategic impact for the province, thereafter make the agreed amendments to plans.

  • Delivers professional advice on risk pricing, risk management matters, including where appropriate the timely involvement of specialists i.e. Group Legal, sector specialists, product specialists.

  • Delivers high standards of credit quality for high-risk cases through the application of best practices to credit proposals.

  • Challenges pricing in order to maximise value and drives a commercial balance between Risk and Reward.

  • Applies Impairment Policy, where appropriate, to ensure Impairments are raised or released in a timely and appropriate fashion. Ensure accurate and timely forecasting of impairments.

  • Owns and drives robust management of distressed exposures through pre-delinquency management, watch list and distressed management and proactive account management. Collaborates with Business Support and Recoveries teams.

    Management and reporting of the Credit Portfolio:

  • Ensures accurate reporting on the provincial portfolio performance on a regular basis.

  • Identifies and analyses portfolio risks proactively, identifying trends and opportunities. Responds with proactive action plans to address concerns and optimise opportunities.

  • Drives in-depth
    analysis of portfolio, testing and monitoring effectiveness of distressed account management, collections and bad debt performance etc

  • Forecasts the Credit loss provision.

  • Manages the Internal and External Audit interactions

    People management:

  • Provides input to BCC SA Credit leadership for technical competencies.

  • Identifies current and potential employee skill requirements in consultation with the Human Capital function and puts relevant development plans in place (e.g., training, rotation, on-the-job learning) Ensures that development opportunities are budgeted for and executed.

  • Coaches and guides the team on all aspects of the credit lifecycle.

  • Manages a team to ensure effective delivery of objectives for the area.

  • Develops a high performing team by embedding the bank's performance process, regular performance feedback and coaching. Addresses poor performance.

  • Motivates team members and ensures that they receive recognition for work well done.

  • Maintains a succession plan for the team by reviewing the skills of the team at least twice a year and has career conversations with them.

  • Interviews and recruits new members of the team, including determining the appropriate salary with input from the Human Capital Business Partner.

  • Creates workforce plans for the area to ensure that current and future business requirements can be met. Such plans should be revisited at least twice a year.

  • Uses workforce plans to obtain headcount approvals on an annual basis and as input into the financial budgeting cycles.

  • Creates quarterly leave plans to ensure adequate coverage. Approves leave requests and leave sell requests.

  • When required, initiates disciplinary processes for team members. Resolves grievances raised by team members, escalating only if unresolved.

    Minimum Qualification and Experience

  • Minimum Qualification: Post Graduate Degree Field of study: Business Commerce

  • Other minimum qualifications, certifications or professional memberships: Banking and Credit Risk management qualification; Accounting qualification or relevant similar studies

  • More than 10 years: Managing a credit function within a large financial institution. Exposure to Credit strategy development. Experience in developing credit risk management frameworks and managing a credit function within a large financial institution.

  • Experience of Credit Risk assessment and evaluation including financial statements, Credit Risk management acumen, commercial acumen, regulatory requirements for lending. Management of large teams across geographies. Exposure to Credit strategy development.
