Job Purpose

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight within BS&R – covering allocated staff and own portfolio of Pre-NPL Watchlist and Non-Performing Loan (“NPL”) matters in the Africa Regions, aligning the strategies of both Wholesale Clients and BCC / CHNW on the continent.

  • Develop the operating model for BS&R, aligning strategies to enhance the execution of the BS&R mandates in the Africa Region.

  • To set up and provide oversight to various Watchlist and Non-Performing Loan Committee meetings.

  • To be directly involved in the management (including restructuring; renegotiation; rescheduling; litigation and or settlement) of distressed and defaulted counter party credit exposures across sectors and geographies covered by BS&R.

  • To represent BS&R in various forums; committees, and review bodies – including but not restricted to Global watchlist and Global NPL; Close Monitoring; Rapid Risk Reviews; Credit Committee / Panels; DA10; and specific debt provision forum.

  • To ensure early detection of potential problem credits by looking at ways to introduce an “early warning” mechanism.

  • To present BS&R sector specific recommendations and reports to various Risk Governance and Business committees absent Head, BS&R.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities


  • Mentor and Coach BCC / CHNW BS&R Managers; Credit Managers and Executives where appropriate.

  • Provide insights on the lessons learned from our distressed and defaulted lending experiences and ensure these are shared with/presented to business and credit to mitigate against future such situations arising.

  • Influence client visits and negotiations to manage credit recovery processes including restructure and/or renegotiation of facilities where applicable. This will necessitate a fair amount of travel to the various countries to visit clients and engage with the BS&R teams in the various jurisdictions.

  • Liaise and meet with internal and external lawyers and liquidators (as applicable) to ensure the best possible outcome for the Bank in terms of a restructure or recovery.

  • Business oriented solution with acceptable risk as opposed to total risk minimisation approach.

  • Develop and oversee implementation of solutions for credit recovery on accounts in order to secure debt, stabilise accounts or turnaround where possible.

  • Influence and negotiate with relevant stakeholders to limit the Bank’s exposure on accounts where applicable.

  • Attend and influence consortium meetings from a business risk perspective where applicable.

    Management of Distressed/Defaulted Counterparties:

  • Guide and advise various stakeholders on credit and business restructures / business rescue processes.

  • Document and communicate relevant decisions to all relevant stakeholders.

  • Assist with regulatory returns; rating agency presentations; and Central Bank presentations / submissions and provide input / advice on these where required.

  • Be able to work closely with the Head, BCC BS&R on an overlapping leadership / involvement in matters basis.

    Financial Reporting & Metrics:

  • Work closely with Finance and BS&R Reporting to ensure
    that the requisite BS&R reports are provided to the relevant Committees within agreed service levels.

  • Work closely with Finance and Business to ensure that the monthly IFRS Provision recommendations are made prior to month end, and authorised appropriately by the BCC / CHNW Specific Debt Provision Forums.

    Governance and Regulatory:

  • Actively engage with external audit teams in respect of annual audits of Africa Regions Watchlist and NPL counter parties.

  • Awareness of the Group Reference Guide (“GRG”); BCC / CHNW Credit Policies; and BS&R Mandate.

  • Awareness of Central Bank (in the countries) and South African Reserve Bank (“SARB”) Regulations concerning distressed and defaulted credit exposures; and renegotiated exposures under Central Bank and SARB Directives.

    Team Management:

  • Align teams to the business strategy and ensure goals are set which are directive of activities and key performance deliverables.

  • Manage a team of Business Support & Recoveries Managers who are placed across the Africa Region

  • Share experience, coach and develop recoveries skills within the team

  • Drive a collaborative culture across the Region to be inclusive of both BCC / CHNWBB and Wholesale Clients.

    Minimum Qualification and Experience

  • Minimum Qualification: First Degree- Field of study: Finance and Accounting/ Legal

  • Preferred Qualification: Honours Degree-Field of study: Legal/Business Commerce/Insolvency Qualification & Risk Management (FRM)

  • More than 10 years Experience Description: Demonstrates a clear understanding of the role BS&R should perform within BCC / CHNW and must be able to provide the team with structure, direction and strategic thinking where appropriate in relation to distressed and defaulted sector exposures to underpin a restructure (note – restructures should deliver a better outcome than liquidation) .

  • 5-7 Years Experience Description: Legal principles related to lending and collateral rights and ability to translate and apply this knowledge to optimise positive outcomes.

  • More than 10 years Experience Description: Deep expertise in the Retail, Business, Commercial and Wholesale Credit risk function. Full understanding of managing credit risk for counterparties with local and multi-national organisations.

  • Sound business savvy and banking knowledge of accounting and financial principles, general banking, wholesale banking. Experience and understanding of Business and Commercial lending business.
