The purpose of the Job

  • The Global Gender Advisor will provide strategic leadership and fosters collaboration between the different layers of the federation on gender transformation topics to mainstream gender equality. Together with the regional offices s/he specifically supports selected countries in implementing gender mainstreaming and collects their learnings. The global Gender Advisor brings together relevant stakeholders on a regular basis for exchange and steering and presents results to the governing bodies of the organization.

  • S/he will also share information and best practices with – and support - SOS Member Associations globally when requested. S/he acts as a link to other organizations and partners to learn about external gender –related topics and bring learnings back into our organization.

  • In this context, the position will be placed in the ESAF Region, which will serve as an initial Gender mainstreaming Hub to ensure best practice sharing and strengthening of projects across the federation through a strong Gender Equality network led by the Global Gender Advisor.

  • Additionally, the incumbent will collaborate and provide technical on-site (regular travels) advice to respective functional units at the International Office to ensure gender-mainstreaming impact at the policy level across the federation.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a key account responsible for gender topics for leadership and governing bodies of SOS Children´s Villages International (SOS CVI) and ensure the provision of high caliber technical advice in the area of gender across the federation

  • Develop a strategy that advocate gender equality which encompasses program and workforce needs with the aim to mainstream gender equality in all core practices including dedicated interventions to promote gender equality
    Support all countries that have gender actions in their 2030 strategies in implementing gender mainstreaming:

  • Collect and share lessons learned on gender equality to build knowledge and capacity

  • member associations in the development of federation wide aligned gender equality strategies and in the development of respective gender sensitive programms

  • Assist with quality assurance of (IPD) proposals upon request by taking part in relevant project review / planning meetings (contracted by various institutional partners)

  • Support Human Resources & Organisational Development (HROD) in mainstreaming:

  • Promote and advocate for strong gender (policy) HR principles including gender equitable work practices

  • Take a key role in supporting the federation wide role out of gender relevant polices such as gender equality policy and policy on prevention and protection against sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse; and take a lead in the developing and promoting of necessary awareness and sensitization initiatives applicable throughout the federation

  • Establish accountability mechanisms to measure progress towards gender equality in the organisation and achievement of the targets set including providing advice and/or conducting Gender Audits as necessary

  • Advise and closely work with Learning and Development and Policy Experts and the Gender Equality network to build on-going
    capacity on gender equality expertise by providing resource materials, practical tools and references

  • Lead the development and implementation of training in gender mainstreaming techniques (including hands-on-training as needed) with the efforts to enhance capacities in gender mainstreaming

  • Strengthen and support existing initiatives and maintain and further develop a strong gender equality network throughout the federation

  • Establish a knowledge sharing hub of best practice

  • In close cooperation with relevant stakeholders develop and monitor KPIs to evaluate growth in gender equality awareness and sensitization to measure program impact and workforce capacities

    Knowledge, skills, qualifications, abilities and behavioral competences:

  • Specific substantive knowledge on and understanding of gender equality issues

  • Experience in applied gender equality work in a similar setting

  • Demonstrated analytical and advocacy skills on gender issues

  • Ability to formulate policy and strategy communications

  • Ability to work under pressure with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and negotiation skills combined with the ability to grow and lead expert networks

  • Strong links with international, regional and national networks on gender equality and women´s rights

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and facilitation skills and the ability to adapt messages to the different audiences

  • Proactive approach to work to take initiative and ability to work independently

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience including field experience in the sectoral gender sensitive programming and implementation combined with five years of relevant experience in development work for national and international organisation.

  • Experience in developing and designing a gender strategy and managing its implementation

  • Experience in capacity development and setting up gender training concepts.

  • Experience in project management including its human and financial resources with the proven ability to advocate for gender issues at senior level
