Purpose of the Job

  • This role plays an instrumental role to design and develop the end-to-end journey of a service within the context of a service value chain, and support existing service delivery. This includes designing new IT services, processes and other aspects of IT Service Management. It assimilates design principles and methods for transforming strategic business objectives into portfolios of services and service assets.

  • There are various Service Management, General Management and Technical Management Practices advocated by ITIL4. But service design encompases all of those.

    Job Objectives

    Across the entire service lifecycle - from acquisition, development and implementation and all the way through to retirement:

  • Liaison with other disciplines within the organisation, to leverage the inputs from all the stakeholders to bring it together in an integrated way.

  • Encourage levelling within the individual disciplines. Each discipline has its own structure and outputs, and the role of the service designer is to make sure inter-discipline interoperability and dependencies are identified.

  • Make sure service ownership is properly defined.

  • Continual service improvement.

  • Understand the overall objective of the service.

  • Identification of stakeholders, and their roles.

  • Understand how the various processes within Shoprite work together to deliver the service, such as Architecture, Governance, Legal etc.

    Assist with the definition of all the service components in collaboration with the Service Owner. This includes (but are not limited to)
    an understanding of:

  • Requirements for the service. This could include understanding specifications, industry best practices, policies, business priorities, objectives and business drivers.

  • Architectural components

  • Dependencies

  • Acceptance criteria

  • Constraints

  • The implementation structure broken down into milestones, activities and deliverables

  • Knowledge management

  • Risk management

  • Quality assurance to ensure that the service which is being designed, is adhered to during the implementation of those services.

  • Manage changes in the service design according to a change control process.


  • Degree with 3 to 5 years related experience.


  • 3-5 Years with proven experience in designing processes, services or solutions.

    Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Excellent relationship management and collaboration skills.

  • Excellent facilitation skills.

  • Good planning and time management skills.

  • Good business and IT acumen.

  • Evidence- and context-based design.

  • Customer focus.
