  • The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.

  • icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya.

  • Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually.

  • The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries, and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations across the world.

    Overall Purpose of the Job

  • The position holder will contribute to the overall objectives of the Arthropod Pathology Unit and Behavior and Chemical Ecology Unit.

    Specific Duties

  • Help in maintaining colonies of insect colonies (Fall Armyworm, bean flower thrips and others)as may be required.

  • Assist the scientist and students in organizing and undertaking behavioral assays with FAWand its natural enemies using Y-tube and 4-arms olfactometer in the lab and screenhouse

  • Assist the scientist and students in undertaking field experiments with FAW managementoptions

  • Ensure that the bioassay labs are well maintained for use by students and scientists

  • Carryout laboratory, screenhouse and field entrainment from FAW infested and uninfested maize and insects using portable entrainment kit and inbuilt volatile collection system

  • Conduct field trials and trapping experiment at different locations

  • Drive scientists and students for
    field for experiment

  • Assist in carrying out headspace trapping of female FAW moths using entrainment kit and assist in testing different FAW lures and traps under laboratory and field conditions

  • Prepare samples for chemical analysis of the volatile compound using GC, GC-FID, GC-MSand HPLC

  • Facilitate procurement of supplies for use in the research work & construction of the screenhouse and infection experimental cages.

  • Assist in analyze research data, prepare progress reports and presentations, and contribute to preparation of manuscripts

  • Undertake other activities related to EU-FAW and other projects as assigned by the scientist.

    Requirements/Qualifications

  • MSc degree in Agriculture/Zoology with specialization in Entomology.

  • At least 5 years’ experience as Research Assistant or equivalent position.

  • Prior experience in field and lab assays with insects and crops

  • Prior experience in behavior and chemical ecology assays

    Core Competencies

  • Good experience in experience in field and lab assays with insects and crops.

  • Good experience in behavior and chemical ecology assays.

  • Ability to undertake driving responsibilities while undertaking field experiments

  • Experience in writing project reports, and in reviewing literature.

  • Experience in designing, data collection and analysis with statistical software packages

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Fast thinking and able to solve day-to-day research challenges in a practical manner.

  • Maintains frequent contact with scientists and other technical staff for exchange of information.

  • A team player with ability to maintain harmonious working relationship in a multi-cultural and multi-racial environment.

    Reporting

  • This position reports to the Unit Head, Arthropod Pathology Unit.
