  • In Kenya ,SHA’s track record stretches over 15 years working with smallholder farmers, farmer associations, cooperatives and small and medium sized enterprises in the agricultural sector with an aim to help them increase production, diversify diets, income and agricultural activities by attracting better prices for their products through value addition and improved access to markets.

  • SHA’s approach to agricultural development is market driven and backed by technical expertise, evidence based best practices built over time from extensive experience in value chain development and project implementation. In addition, SHA works to raise awareness of smallholder farmers’ issues and represent their interests at policy and institutional levels.

    Specifically, the consultant willhave a roleto:

    • Conceptualize, design, and develop IEC materials as required by the 3 focus projects/programmes with appropriate and relevant messages tailored for key stakeholders using various formats as appropriate such as text, graphics, imageries, infographics, video, printed materials, etc.

    • Support planning and management of events including the 2021 Cassava Conference.

    • Develop and consolidate strong media ties to promote widespread outreach to the public, development partners and other stakeholders.

    • Evolve successful goal-oriented communication plans with the relevant program/projects.

    • In liaison with project/programme staff, develop content for the print, virtual and broadcast media including social networking websites, for the relevant projects.

    • Target appropriate communication channels, dissemination methods and media such as video, print, web/online media, traditional media, and social media, among others, to effectively communicate key messages to specific stakeholders.

    • Design a generic publication layout for the various projects/programmes for use in future publications.

    • Develop a style guide for all communications on Programmatic issues to ensure consistent formats for publications and communication products in liaison with the SHA Kenya Communications Officer.

    • Document lessons learnt and case studies for sharing with projects/programmes implementing teams, donors, partners, and other stakeholders.

    • Assist with other assignments as may be required.6.0Key Qualification, Experience and Skills The consultant will work closely and have relationships with the SHA Kenya Communications Officer, SHA Head of Communications, SHA Country Director Kenya, Programme/Project Managers, Finance and Administration team, and Project Implementing partners.

    The consultant must have:

    • Preferably advanced degree in one or more of the following disciplines: Communications, Business marketing, English, Development Communication, Organizational Communications, media technologies, Journalism, or other related discipline.

    • Experience working in a development/donor funded programmes preferably funded by the European Union, Irish Aidis desired.

    • Experience working with SHA target sectors including
    agriculture, natural resources, nutrition, and WASH.

    • Proven track record in strategic communications planning, advertising, messaging and IEC development among others.

    • Must be able to function well in a team environment.

    • Must have the ability to effectively prioritize projects and multi-task.

    • Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative.

    • Ability to work in a multi-cultural team and environment.

    • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills.

    • Ability/willingness to travel to events and field as required by the various projects.

    In addition:

  • Excellent command of English and Kiswahili –written and oral Commitment to international and humanitarian NGO codes, standards and practices.

  • Excellent writing and Presentation/verbal skills

  • Excellent compute skills particularly with software applications like Power point, Adobe Creative Suite (especially in design, Premier and Photoshop)etc

  • Ability to establish firm and reliable networks with various media outlets.


  • All communications, tools and final report must be in English language.
