Job Description

  • Plan International was founded over 75 years ago with a mission to promote and protect the rights of children. The organisation was set up by British journalist John Langdon-Davies and refugee worker Eric Muggeridge in 1937, with the original aim to provide food, accommodation and education to children whose lives had been disrupted by the Spanish Civil War.

    The Opportunity

  • We are recruiting for an interim Digital Policy and Advocacy Officer to join the Digital and Innovation team within our Strategy and collaboration department. You will support and drive policy and advocacy efforts to bridge the gender digital divide through the digital empowerment of girls.

  • You will advise on policy and advocacy in the space of the gender digital divide, ensuring that you are aware of policy and research in the space of digital, gender and rights and advising on the use, risks and benefits of a variety of social media and online tools for advocacy.

  • This role will require internal collaboration with policy and advocacy colleagues, external partnership with organisations specialised in digital policy and advocacy and keen participation in digital networks, including catalysts, champions and Plan International’s Areas of Global Distinctiveness.

    Role Purpose

  • Support and drive policy and advocacy efforts to bridge the gender digital divide through the digital empowerment of girls.

    Key Accountabilities or Main Responsibilities

    • Drive policy and advocacy efforts to bridge the gender digital divide through the digital empowerment of girls at Plan International.

    • Advise on policy and advocacy in the space of the gender digital divide.

    • Stay abreast of policy and research in the space of digital – gender – rights (UN, govts,
    banks, think thanks, academia etc.)

    • Advise on use of social media / online tools for advocacy, incl. risks.

    • Represent Plan in internal and external working groups.

    • Support needs for Digital catalyst(s) within Global Influencing & Partnership functions, as well as other key relationships within Plan International.

    Requirements

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Proven experience in international work environments and intercultural communication, including an understanding of NGO structures, the girls and women’s equality movement and the UN human rights and humanitarian system.

    • Experience in policy & influencing design, monitoring & evaluation, learning and knowledge management.

    • Experience in international development, including demonstrable experience in policy and advocacy with regard to the gender digital divide.

    Competencies: Leadership and Business and Management

    • Strong communication, representational and inter-personal skills.

    • Coordination and network chairing skills.

    • Ability to work to a high standard, managing stress effectively whilst prioritising multiple tasks and competing deadlines.

    • Sound diplomatic and networking skills and experience in the effective use of soft power.

    • Ability to frame issues and identify routes to influence.

    • Experience of working in a matrixed and networked team.
