The Role

The Business Development Manager (BDM) manages the Business Development Unit (BDU) and is responsible for identifying quality funding opportunities through diversified funding streams that are aligned to program and influencing priorities as identified in our Country Strategy.

The purpose of this role is to spearhead Business development and ensure funds are raised to support the achievement of country targets regarding the funding portfolio, while assisting Plan Uganda to develop a strong professional image amongst Plan Donors, so that additional grant funding can be acquired and Plan Uganda can grow in supporting Plan’s programmes in Uganda.

The position will lead in the writing of successful grant proposals in coordination with program colleagues in Uganda and with other National Organizations. As well as strengthen systems and processes for effective grant management.

Dimensions of the Role

  • Resourcing of annual budgets (FY19 €16 million) through quality income and diversified funding opportunities to deliver on country strategy.

  • Seek to build and maintain business relationships with various donors in countries including but not limited to multilaterals, corporate, government, institutional etc;

  • Strategically engage with Plan International’s National Organisations (NOs) and Regional Hubs based for positioning and business intelligence;

  • Play a leading role into the design and submission of the expressions of interests, capacity statements, concept notes, detailed proposals for wide range of donors.

  • Accountable for compliance with donor agreements including timely submission of high-quality reporting as required.

  • The BDU consists of 4 persons and the BD supervises the Grants Management & Compliance Manager;

  • A member of the Country Management Team (CMT) and Country Leadership Team (CLT)

    Do you have what it takes?

  • Demonstrated track experience in the areas of proposal development, grants management, resource mobilisation,
    and/or donor contract management.

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of international donor interests, priorities and requirements and proven successes in business development and proposal writing.

  • Knowledge of the various donors’ interests, priorities and requirements and horizon scanning of new and innovative funding opportunities.

  • Experience of capacity building and prior experience in the design, delivery, or management of programmes in education, youth economic empowerment, water and sanitation, humanitarian response in Uganda/East Africa or in a country with similar context.

    Conceptional and analytical skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and the ability to analyse and synthesise complex issues will be essential as will strong networking, influencing and negotiation skills.

  • Master’s Degree in relevant field

  • Minimum five years of professional experience in development work particularly in fundraising or resource mobilization

  • Knowledge and experience of gender transformative programing

  • Knowledge of child rights-based approach to programming
