Job Description

  • The appointment will be made from the designated group in line with the Employment Equity Plan of Old Mutual South Africa and the specific business unit in question.

  • Old Mutual Limited has decided to adopt the mandatory vaccination policy requiring its workforce to be fully vaccinated by 1 March 2022. All prospective employees are required to disclose their vaccination certificates or cards as part of the recruitment process.

  • The role of the Financial Reporting Controls (FRC) team is to maintain a robust financial control environment for the Old Mutual Limited (OML) Group, and to manage the risk of material misstatement in either Financial or Capital disclosures.

  • The team acts as Business Partners to the OML businesses (South Africa and Rest of Africa) to assist them in designing and embedding controls. This includes liaising with the BU CFO’s to facilitate the scoping of the control environment and the attestation sign-offs of the effectiveness of the control environment to the OML CFO. This role will support the OML FRC Team in assisting the businesses across OML to assess risks and monitor their financial control environment.

    The Cape Town based role will support the Group Financial Reporting Controls (FRC) team and is focused on the following main activities:

    • Facilitating and co-ordinating the FRC scoping, attestation, and continuous improvement review processes;

    • Various DCT (Data Controls Tool – the repository for controls) related activities;

    • Ongoing embedding activities of FRC;

    • Reviewing and provision of advisory services to the Old Mutual businesses on the design and adequacy of the control environment;

    • Reporting of control breakdowns to senior stakeholders;

    • Supporting the team with management of the external auditors;

    • Facilitating/organizing the annual process of scoping of the control environment;

    • Managing the bi-annual attestation sign-off process of the effectiveness of the control environment;

    • Owning the Continuous Improvement Review process of controls on the Data Controls Tool (DCT – the repository for controls);

    • Collating reports from DCT;

    • Providing support/training to DCT users in carrying out DCT-related responsibilities;

    • Providing support to allocated OML business units.

    This involves
    the following:


    • Taking ownership of the monitoring and embedding of the FRC methodology;

    • Collate and review deficiencies across OML as highlighted by reports from the Data Controls Tool (DCT – the repository for FRC controls) and assist business units to remediate the deficiencies;

    • Providing updates to the relevant Finance Managers on the effectiveness of their control environment using MI from the Data Controls Tool;

    • Owning the relationship with senior Finance Managers to assist them in reviewing and managing their control environment.

    • The role provides exposure to senior finance stakeholders and the opportunity to learn more about the operations of different business units across OML.

    Requirements:

    • B. Com, Bus Science or equivalent qualification.

    • Completed articles or newly qualified CA(SA) would be advantageous.

    • An independent thinker with excellent influencing and communication (verbal and written) skills.

    • Good inter-personal skills and ability to collaborates effectively at various levels.

    • Motivated self-starter with the ability to cut through complex issues.

    • Proactive approach to the resolution of problems and obstacles

    • Significant personal drive and energy

    • Confidence to challenge and influence key business decision-makers

    • Attention to detail

    • Able to understand and analyze the risks of complex financial processes with strong basis on accounting principles.

    • An understanding of business processes, financial systems and their impact on financial reporting and risk will be an advantage
