Job Description

  • The vision of the newly formed New Growth and Innovation (NGI) function is to create shareholder value of the future through delivering disruptive and sustainable growth and innovation to secure Old Mutual for the next 176 years.

  • NGI has been established to capitalise on market opportunities and ecosystems by delivering game changing initiatives through a two-fold approach, enabled via a lean and cost efficient organisational structure that can be scaled quickly and efficiently, namely by:

    • Protecting the core Old Mutual business through new ventures and partnerships, unlocking short-medium term value for Old Mutual (1 – 3 years).

    • Building a new core that creates long term value for Old Mutual through exploring new ecosystems for value and partnerships (4 years +).

  • The role of the Innovation Manager within NGI will focus primarily on exploring new ecosystems.

    Purpose:

  • To identify, assess and secure opportunities within new ecosystems for Old Mutual.

    Strategy

    • Translate NGI’s overall organisational strategy into focussed innovation strategies and plans.

    Innovation

    • Own the NGI Opportunities pool.

    • Identify and track new consumer trends, communities of interest / eco systems and innovative product offerings locally, across Africa and globally.

    • Drive innovation and solution development of relevant financial services and products for these new consumer groups (communities).

    • Assess and track innovations currently underway throughout Old Mutual in order to ensure visibility across the organisation.

    • Assess and provide feedback on innovation ideas / concepts proposed by internal staff

    • Attend pitch camps, innovation hubs and incubators in order to scout for opportunities with start up organisations

    • Identify, evaluate and negotiate potential partnerships with established organisations, such as retailers, telcos etc

    • Assist with the development of concept documents, business cases and implementation plans for opportunities

    Stakeholder Management

    • Build strong relationships with innovation managers and product owners throughout Old Mutual, both locally and across Africa

    • Participate in the negotiation process with potential partners

    • Identify, build and maintain relationships with relevant parties in the innovation space, such as incubators, funders, start ups

    Process and Reporting

    • Own the Ventures Studio assessment tool and process

    • Identify metrics
    for assessment of potential opportunities

    • Analyse key metrics and produce suitable dashboards and reports to deliver insights and feedback to internal and external stakeholders and governance structures

    Financial Management

    • Develop and manage the Ventures Studio budget, review and approve expenditure in line with set budget, identify and implement cost efficiencies.

    People Management

    • Ensure effective people management and development in order to build capability to meet current and future business needs.

    Key Outputs

    • Defined innovation strategy.

    • Completed business cases for new opportunities identified.

    • Completed assessments of new and existing opportunities.

    • Contracts with partners drafted, approved and signed.

    • Delivery against performance measures defined and agreed with the Head: NGI.

    • Key outputs, successes and failures shared with Head: NGI.

    Experience

    • 5 - 10 years experience in innovation of which at least 5 years are at a management level.

    Education:

    • Postgraduate degree in relevant field.
