Requirements for appointment

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have: -

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) degree from a recognized university;

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Council of Legal Education; and

  • Admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya,

  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system;

  • Research skills;

  • DCT skills;

  • Interpersonal and Communication skills;

  • Organizational and administrative skills;

  • Problem solving skills; and

  • Report writing skills.

    Personal Qualities

    In addition to the above requirements, an officer must have the following qualities: -

  • Ability to get well with the diverse workforce;

  • Positive working altitude;

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;

  • Creativity and innovativeness;

  • Ability 1a work under pressure;

  • Ability to work well with teams; and

  • Professionalism.

  • Meets Chapter Six (6) of the constitution of Kenya 2010; Integrity, Honesty and Accountability.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This is the entry and training grade for this cadre. An officer at this level may be deployed to work at any of the Departments al the Headquarters or County Offices under the guidance of a more senior and experienced officer. Specifically, duties and responsibilities will entail: -

  • Undertake prosecutions on all matters allocated to them.

  • Study and evaluate case files presented and make the decision to charge.

  • Drafting appropriate legal document to be filed in court, in consultation with the
    supervisors to ensure ODP is fully prepared for the court cases submitted, and to support compliance with the requirements
    of the court.

  • Facilitate participation of victims, witnesses, complainants and accused persons in
    the criminal justice system and protection of their rights to ensure a seamless prosecution service.

  • Undertake research on assigned legal issues and compile reports on relevant information gathered ta ensure the prosecution services offered are well informed and are of high quality.

  • Liaise with the police and other law enforcement agencies where necessary to ensure
    sufficient collection of evidence that supports timely and just decisions.

  • Conduct legal research on the files allocated to them to ensure the prosecution process is well informed and reasoned which enhances the quality of prosecution services offered to the stakeholders.

  • Maintain a record of data and prepare reports on all the matters attended to.

  • Prepare briefs on different legal cases as assigned in a manner that meets the legal quality standards set, to ensure favorable decisions on cases forwarded by ODPP.

  • Implementation of prosecutorial policies and guidelines to ensure quality service delivery,

  • Implementation of individual work plans ta ensure that the activities are directed towards achievement of the strategic plan.
