Niras KE-2 Urban Planner and Urban Policy Expert Jobs in Malawi

  • Malawi is vulnerable to multiple hazards, especially floods, droughts, earthquakes, and landslides because of its unique geo-climatic conditions. The location of the country along a tectonically active boundary between two major African plates within the great East African Rift System cause earthquakes and landslides.

  • Over the past few decades, Malawi has experienced more than 19 major floods and seven droughts, with these events increasing in frequency, magnitude and scope over the years. Recurrent disasters in Malawi have had far-reaching impacts on food, energy, health, water and other sectors of the country’s economy. In particular, these disaster events have undermined the stability of livelihoods among the most vulnerable communities.

  • The Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS III) seeks to reduce vulnerability and enhance the resilience of its population to disasters and socio-economic shocks through the development, updating and dissemination of location specific disaster risk information, including hazard and vulnerability maps to decision makers, the general public and communities at risk, among other strategies.

  • Against this background, a number of projects will be undertaken with support from the World Bank under
the Malawi Resilience and Disaster Risk Management Project (MRDRMP).

  • We are looking for an urban planner to join the project team for preparation and development of risk management strategy and flood risk management plan.

    Qualifications required:

  • MSc degree in Urban Planning, urban Architecture, or similar.

  • Be registered with a recognized planning profession board.

    Professional experience required:

  • 10 years of experience in urban planning and development with special focus on:

  • Disaster risk management,

  • Urban development mechanisms, and

  • Policy development and institutional frameworks.

  • Working experience in green development and climate change adaptation is desirable.
