  • The Gatsby Africa (UK) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) have committed seed funding for Msingi’s first 5 years.

  • Gatsby is an independent foundation set up in
    1967 by Lord David Sainsbury, and has worked in East Africa since 1985.

  • Gatsby initiated the concept of Msingi and is playing a hands-on role in its development.

  • DFID, the UK government department responsible for overseas aid, aims to promote sustainable development and alleviate poverty.

    Purpose of the Industry Associate Role

  • Msingi’s first focus industry is Commercial Aquaculture.

  • This role will work within the aquaculture
    team and will contribute to various industry interventions aimed at unlocking solutions to catalyze lasting change in the sector.

  • The role holder will be guided by the company and market development guidelines and standards.

  • Msingi is not looking for individuals with prior experience of aquaculture (although this is not
    precluded), but you will require commercial acumen, sharp analytical skills and an ability to learn
    quickly.

  • The role will help to manage a network of world-leading experts and technical advisors.

    Key Responsibilities

    As part of the Aquaculture team, you will contribute to:

  • Analyzing constraints, opportunities and other characteristics of the aquaculture industry in East
    Africa;

  • Developing agreements with key companies in the industry to improve productivity and stimulate
    innovation and investments;

  • Managing contractual relations with companies;

  • Engaging and managing other industry stakeholders, as and when needed, for example,
    industry
    associations;

  • Working collaboratively with the Monitoring Specialist in monitoring progress of interventions and changes in the industry;

  • Undertaking regular field visits to collect and synthesize information to understand end to end
    industry dynamics and levers of change; and

  • Perform any other duties relevant for the development of the industry as requested from time to
    time.

    Experience and Personal Qualities Required

    Msingi is looking for star-performers that have:

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in Economics, Business or related fields from a
    reputable university;

  • Up to 3 years’ relevant work experience. Relevant aquaculture experience is appreciated for the role but is not essential;

  • Ability to analyse data and other sources of information, probe for further information, make
    rational judgements from the available information and analysis and understand how one issue
    may be part of a larger system;

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills;

  • A proactive, creative and entrepreneurial attitude;

  • Good communication and relationship building skills;

  • Ability to produce high quality written documents;

  • Ability to learn quickly and ask questions;

  • The ability to adapt and respond to change;

  • Firm ethical standards, demonstrating integrity and values-driven; and

  • A passion for the dynamics affecting East African economic development

    Terms and Remuneration

  • The contract for this work will be permanent and full-time.

  • The job will be based in Nairobi with up to
    50% travel in the region.

  • The salary will be competitive and is negotiable dependent on experience.
